    Bf2 & X800xl

Hi just got a new x800xl 256 all in wonder agp card, it installed fine and installation of newest drivers (6.5) was like a dream, i did the usual remove old drivers use driver cleaner in safe mod etc.

Ok most of my games run superb now (oblivion, ghost recon advanded warfighter, guild wars, css) most of them games run high to medium/high with no problems.

But battlefield still runs crap ok runs alright on low about 70 fps to 30 in firefights but if i touch it up to medium well the first 4 settings terrain etc it slows down to 30 and goes into 20's it is very annoying as my old 9700 pro ran the game fine on low but x800xl cant even run it on medium or even low properly. I dont know what it could be i wil post my specs below really need help .

p4 2.4 (i know its gay but cant afford new one yet)
    ga-8siml mainboard
    ati x800xl 256 aiw
    2 gig pc2700
    audigy 2zs (latest drivers)
    2x80 gig hardrives
    4 meg connection
300watt psu (yes it is low but is able to run everything as i only have hardrives and gfx card connected to it)

I have my page file as 1534 on my d drive which holds all my games and leave c drive nice and clean for apps and windows etc. The processor scheduling is set to background services in system I dont know wether that is wrong?.

Oh and in control panel for ati it wont let me turn agp write on everytime i click on it says reboot then when i launch back up its off maybe that is a problem?

Sorry if I talk to much but the only reason i bought this card was for bf2 mainly because i love it :)

How much memory do you have

You CPU could be the cause of poor performance(bottlenecking)

        Re: Bf2 & X800xl

Except for CPU i dont really see any problem

I dont think Your PSU would make a difference to performance so either your CPU is causeing you this problem or the card just is not good enough for the settings but i find that hard to belive since a 9800xtx can run on medium settings just fine

Did you get the crad new or is it second hand

Maybe it is faulty or something maybe some one with a greater knowledge than myself will have a better answer for you

i see CPU and PSU could be a problem.

As i count alot of devices running in it so could be a cheap PSU not able to cope. A 2.4ghz processor is tiny to run n BF2 as its very processor intensive!

if u have a second machine lieing about u could try putting it in there and see what happens. Also do the basics like clean out your pc of spyware and defrag it!

              Re: Bf2 & X800xl

PSU is too weak. 400 watt minimum to keep that system stable. Thats my opinion based on personal experience.

The CPU is slower than would be ideal but I have an AMD 3200+ that is underclocked 200 MHZ (1.8ghz) and and it runs better than what you are describing.

Check in the ATI Control panel (SMARTGART) and make sure your AGP is set to at least 4x, and 8x if you have it.

Check your BIOS and see if AGP Fastwrites are on, if so, turn them off.

Check your BIOS for the AGP Apreture, turn it up to 64 or 128 if available.

Check the sound settings in-game. if EAX is enabled, disable it. if Hardware sound is enabled, switch it to software.

Turn Lighthing and shadows to low, turn Anti-Aliasing to 2x or off and see if that helps.

Tell us if any of these help.

how about the sound settings i mentioned?

                  And the Anti-Aliasing?

P.S. I have the exact same video card and mine works great. Im thinking its a settings issue.

                    Re: Bf2 & X800xl

erm my sound in game is medium software no eax and i never use anti aliasing

                    my control centre settings are;

                    anti aliasing let application decide
                    anisotropic filtering let application decide
                    catalyst ai disabled
                    mipmap details quality
wait for vertical refresh always off
                    and adaptive is unticked

                      Re: Bf2 & X800xl

                      Try going to Hardware sound.

                      Set Dynamic Shadows to low/off

Adjust the Trilinear filtering setting up and down.

I'm convinced its an in-game setting. Try turning EVERYTHING to low/off and bring them up one at a time until your FPS goes to crap... that will identify your problem.

Ive also heard that the game likes higher resolutions. Try 1280 x 1024 or so... Also check your refresh rate... 1280 x 1024 75HZ...

ok i tryed gemotry and texture on medium and seems fine so far so il keep upping the rez, i use to run 1280 1024 on my 9700 pro and it improved performance and looked nice i really appreciate the help thanx and ill try the sound setting, its just a pain going into a game and out and changing stuff.

Yeah, but the payoff at the end is great. Keep experimenting.

Incidently, how are the FPS now?

the all in wonder card is a decent card, but the power supply is killing you, it is what kills me. im running an x850pro on a 220w psu, and the card cant perform how it should be.

Do you have a Bestbuy in your area? If so, use the Bestbuy Troubleshooting system.

Go buy a nice 400/500 watt power supply on a creditcard, bring it home and plug it in... if it fixes your problem, return it immediatly, say it is the wrong kind and you have to get it from the manufacturer of your computer, get a refund, then replace it online for cheaper from like newegg.com or something.
