    Am2?

Is anyone runnnig these yet? I was looknig on newegg and I was thinking that this will be what I want, because this will be the future AMD sockets. I found a 3800+ for $150 on newegg. Isn't that good? It has a clock frequency of 2.4ghz and stuff.

I looked at the mobo's and it looked like people were having somewhat of some trouble with BIOS and stuff.

    Yeah...

I'd wait. AMD is going to be slashing their prices in late July. I'd also wait for a few more mobos to come out, there aren't any really good offerings right now.

I would echo what he said, but with one exception. If you're going to be buying a s939 right now, dont overclock and are just getting a standard Asus board... you should just get AM2. DDR2 and AM2 will allow more flexibility in the future even if you're paying a tad bit more now than in july.

If you just buy now, go AM2 over 939 for the average person.

Isn't AM2 gonig to becoem AMD's main stream socket then? It's the only reason I was looking at it.

It is the new mainstream socket. Right now avaliability of CPU's and mobos is a little skimpy, and there is a very slight cost increase over 939. Probably going to cost $20-40 USD more for the entire computer to go DDR2/AM2 over DDR/939.

Right now AM2 performs the same as 939, but once newer CPUs are released in 2007 they should drop into AM2 and allow for some nice performance upgrades. Also DDR2 is the memory of the future, so you dont have to invest in a dead end by going DDR.

I'd get a better psu if I were you, I can't really recommend the one that comes with that case.

Interesting, you got a very rare and now discontinued chip. AMD just discontinued most/all of their 1MB parts. Have fun with that.

I wouldnt be surprised if we see more 1MB on 939 getting cut soon as well.

I wonder why? I guess they'll cut prices by getting rid of all the expensive procs.

AMD basically can't keep up with demand. They need to appease Dell and other OEMs to prove that they can compete with Intel above 20% marketshare.

What AMD is going to do is shift all of it's 1MB cache production capacity to Opteron and FX chips. Those are higher margin chips which command a premium price. AMD knows that it will lose against Conroe on the desktop, but that in the enterprise they have a chance to break even or beat Intel's new server offerings.

Intel is still shipping bastardized desktop ships and calling them servers, and as long at that continues AMD can at least match Intel's performance, and be more competitive than on the desktop.

With the price cuts that are about 30 days away, AMD and Intel will be discounting their chips, AMD can't afford to sell 1MB cache for cheap, so they are simply eliminating them from the portolio. AMD is still stuck on .90nm tech, while intel is transitioning to .65nm, giving intel the muscle in the upcoming battle, they can produce more chips, with more cache than AMD can in the same space, and dont forget Intel has many times more production capacity than AMD.

I think that deserves a standalone post in the tech section.

It costs alot more to make a 1Mb L2 chip than a 512kb L2. Couple that with a lower defective rate by producing a lower cache, and the fact it doesn't increase performance by much with AMD.
