I got rid of dsl and went with a wireless provider (only other source of internet here). i have better down/upload times 450/450 but i keep getting internet connection problems on screen and it freezes up. nothing changed except the internet provider. ISP are not gamers , dont know what i am talking about. i had them check to make sure the bf2 ports were enabled on their end. dont know what else to do. problem keeps getting worse, not better. my pings go from anywhere from 28 to over a 1000 and back down again in a few seconds I havent changed anything else on computer including firewalls, virus protection etc when i switched isp. A friend also plays bf2 on same isp , same tower and has no problem and he is alot farther from the tower.

Wireless is not ideal for gaming, it depends on what type it is.... microwave dish, or just regular WiFi etc... My best understanding as to why your getting high latency is that the signal they send to your computer is encrypted, and because of wireless' inherent nature of dropping packets, every peice of data sent has to be confirmed that it arrived. In addition there are probably several relay stations that transmit your signal, further creating lag.
Essentially this makes additional latency overhead, above and beyond the regular internet lag.
Copper wires or Fiber are much better alternatives to any form of wireless. Local WiFi is not bad, as long as it's in your home off of a DSL or Cable connection, but subscribing to WiFi, microwave, or statelite etc.... is not going to give you acceptable latency is most cases.
For gaming your probably better off with DSL. -

thanks i thought the dsl i had sucked until i got this its 700 mz i think ,not wi fi - though i dont understand why friend uses same isp off of same tower and farther away and gets less ping/lag. i live in the land that time forgot so i dont have too many choices. cable wont come out of town.Comment

I had tried the wireless on my laptop but the good old connection lost thing began to **** me off a little so I just plug up now so I dont really have to worry about it...Comment

i am glad i racked up all my points on bf2 with the dsl as with the wireless i get killed everytime by screen freezes up. theres got to be a solution. how about if i turn my 6800gt video card down to low? would that help?Comment

no, if you play a round of singleplayer you will see that turning down the video options wouldn't help. It has almost certainly got to be your ISP.Comment
