Possible Overclocking problems?

Okay so first of all

AMD Athlon 3800+ Dual Core
1 gig Corsair DDR
ASUS EN7600GT 2DHT 256MB
ASUS A8N-E, nForce4 Ultra sk 939
Cooler Master Ammo 533
Spire 600W PSU
Cooler Master Neon Led Casefan 120x120x25mm TLF-S12


I've overclocked my video card and all seems well except for odd freezing and crashing once in awhile. I've turned it down before as an early crash flat out said it was my video card. So, is this damaging to the card itself? My temperature does not get above 55 C while gaming. The highest I've actually seen it go was 51 ans mostly see it at 45 like it is now reset to stock and have not been playing for a half hour..

I've enjoyed the better graphics and smooth play with higher settings and can deal with the odd freeze up. However, if I'm screwing this card up I will discontinue. When I use the detect optimal frequency it puts the core at 591MHz and Mem Clock at 772Mhz and then I turn it down. First what do both mean? Second why would I get odd freezing and crashing if I turn it down from this? I'm going to turn it down again and see if it stops.


The last thing is I still get a slight stutter and now that this was overclocked it seems like something else gives it a slight stutter sometimes, why? Firewall off and as much as I can turn off as I know but then there are still 26 processes going on. How do I know what to turn off. Sometimes also the Nvidia icon in the bottom right disappears when I alt tab from BF. I actually watch it go away. Why is that and how do I get it back?

Did you put everything at stock settings and try again? I wouldnt trust the detect optimal frequencies option either. I would either use ATi tool or overclock manually and check for artifacts with 3DMark. You could very well be killing your card with an unstable overclock. Eventhough your temperatures are fine there are other things that effect overclocks.

26 processes arent bad in my opinion, but you could always start by sorting them by user and googling things running under your account name.

Optimal Freq's killed my 6600. Maybe the reason was because of poor cooling. Just be careful when overclocking.

I don't think cooling is a problem but then I could be wrong, it's just I've never seen my card ever go above 51C mostly I see it hang around 46 while gaming.

The best version for testing would be 3Dmark06. Run the benchmark, preferably in a loop for a short while. I would think 20 mins is more than enough. Artifacts will be obvious, they might look like snow, you might get a checker board effect, youll know when you see it.

I've got 3DMark03 free and I ran it and didn't see anything odd happening. So, to not fry my vid card I turn it up a little bit run it again and see if anything odd happens.

My score was 13109

and CPU score around 970.

First what do these mean and is this a good score?

EDIT/ Okay so I think this is a good score so why the hell do I stutter sometimes? It happened before I overclocked as well. It's like lag but when I ask no one else has it.

I leave the game to check temperature how fast do they cool down? It only takes seconds to see it.

When the stuttering starts, watch the hard drive light if you have one. If the light starts turning on or off it could be a lack of RAM. Chances are it stutters for the first couple mins of each map on BF2.

3dMark03 is very outdated. Run 05 or 06 to get a true comparison. Scores of older versions cannot be directly compared to newer versions.
