7900GT vs. X1800XT

Ok, this is my FINAL decision for upgrading my PC, this is what i'm doin so far:
CPU: 3800+
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC4000 2x512
Video Card: 7900GT or X1800XT

Ok, the only X1800xT i can get is the 256 mb one, the 512mb is too expensive (100 more bucks), and the 7900GT is 20 bucks more than teh X1800XT, and overclocked ones are even more. So i need to know which one will be better. Anyways, i run at 1280x1024 if you need to know. Anyways, the sole reason i'm not making a poll is cuz whenever there is a poll, people jsut vote and don't give a damn opinion. And the opinion is more important. Please back up why you think either GPU is better for me, and don't just say cuz you own it or anything, i don't want fanboyism (seems like a lot of nvidia fans no offense), i want pure hard facts, and yes i am overclocking, no, i'm not voltmodding, and no, i'm not buying a aftermarket cooler or water cooling.

well, these cards in hardware term are pretty idetical. its ur choice. which ever company u like better here. which one has been more reliable ot u. for me i like nvidia.

Well, i technically like ATi (FX series still scares me), it's just that my first real vid card was a Radeon 9200, and then i got a X800XL, both were very capable. It seems to me from MANY review sites that thhe X1800XT does better at stock speeds, so i'm just wondering about overclock potential.

I would suggest the 7900gt. Only thing is that some of them have problems, that's the only thing I'd be leery about. However if you get a good one you can voltmod it very easily and be running very close to the 7900GTXs.

On a side note, any reason you picked the 3800 over the Opty 165? The 165 is only $30 more.

Also have you though about waiting until AMDs price cut? The will be cutting the price of dual core CPUs 30%-50% in late July.

HI JIMMY NORTON, nice to see you again. Anyways, how do you voltmod, just by common sense i think it would be risky, so i'm not sure about voltmodding. Anyways, 3800+ is single core, if i had the money to go for dual core, i would be ALL OVER the opty 165. Basically, at first, i never had the money to get dual core, i had enough money for, like a opty 146 or a 3700+SD, but the vid card that i could get would be a 7600GT And i already have a GPU that's at least somewhat close to the perf of a 7600GT, so i decided it wasn't worth it and jsut downgraded the CPU from 3700+/opty 146, to a 3800+, that gives me like 60-80 more dollars to spend on graphics card. So then i jumped to three good graphics cards, teh X1800GTO (unlockable to 16 pipes), 7900GT, and X1800XT, i eliminated the GTO, because even if i did unlock it by flashing bios, i still couldn't get close to the clock speeds of a X1800XT, and the XT was only 20 bucks more. So now i'm down to these two, and i can't wait for price cut, the old parts (and some new budget parts) of my current comp will go to building my computer in china (we go to china every year, decided to buy a condo there last year), and i'm leaving for china from mid-late july, i'll be away for a month, so it's kinda impossible to catch the price cut (I REALLY wish i could, then i could upgrade to dual core or a better single core).

Oh, ok, didn't think you meant the SC 3800. anywho, to voltmod the 7900 all you do is connect a few point with conductive ink. It invloves no soldering, and is reversable.

Mine for example has a stock clockspeed of 550Mhz, non voltmodded I could overclock to 585Mhz, voltmodded I can clock to 700+Mhz.

Very easy to do, and quite safe. Of course you may need 3rd party cooling depending what voltage you mod to.

i have a 1800xt wit 512 mb of ram and love it i average 80-100 fps in bf2.

damn right it ****ing owns :) i've got everything maxed out without anyy problems at all...

4x adaptive aa, 16x hq af and still 60-90 fps maxed out in Day Of Defeat source, need i say more ? ^^

and it costed me 319 euros, and if you're an american ( sorry cant be arsed reading if you are ) it will be cheaper for you so.... its worth it ...

because games like the new Tomb Raider need 512mb to run it maxed out, and it will only get worse down the line...

Even if it is worth it (which i kinda doubt), i don't have the damn money to pay an extra 100 bucks.

EDIT: Due to some miscommunitcation about when we are going to China, we ended up going like 2 weeks early, we're leavin on july 8 and coming back on August 14, which is exactly 5 weeks (cuz july has 31 days), so i'm gonna wait it out (we're leaving in 2 weeks and a couple of days), so then i can get those much cheaper A64 prices (cuz conroe is coming out), and hopefully, there will be some other cheap graphics card out there that fits my price and performance needs.
