I think the nvidia=performance ati=quality was towards 3d image quality. ATi has been known for having slightly better image quality for a while, but nvidia is catching up. Ive had both an ATi and nvidia card and I havent had a problem with any drivers.

I'll also throw in a vote for the:

ATI = better IQ
nVidia = better performance

It has been argued more often than not at the big tech sites that ATI has "slightly" better image quality. The operative word being slightly...no one is saying nVidia sucks.

Besides those big tech sites who make these claims, there are also many forum regulars here whom you guys take advice from daily who have switched from nVidias to ATI's...and confirmed through their own opinion about the slight increase in IQ.

Now then, honestly the average person may not even notice, beyond screenshots and careful cross examinations.

Someone said that if you overclock an eVga its warranty doesnt get voided. Is there a manufacturer with similar warranty that makes ATI cards? Also, which is amongst the best ATI manufacturers?

X1800XT is a great card, it has usable 6xAA (Nvidis's 8xSAA eats into the performance too much) HQ AF is great, the drivers are no worry (not for a few years now) AA+HDR looks great in the games that support them both.

the only thing going against it compared to Nvidia is the awful shadows in BF2 - you'll want to turn them off.

Sapphire is currently the biggest off-side producer of ATI cards. They have excellent prices too.. I've had 2 cards from sapphire now (9800 Pro, X850XT) and I am very satisfied with the performance!

No problem, that's what we do at a forum, help others. Anyways, yea, the eVga and BFG (or was it XFX) warrantys don't get voided if you overclock, or voltmod, and it's lifetime. And yea, Sapphire is one of the biggest if not biggest side-off producer of ATi cards and are often the first to get the new chips.

I don't see why people are saying ATI is better for quality only. ATI beats out Nvidia in most games with the X1900 XTX, has better image quality, better high resolution and AA/AF performance. The only category where ATI loses are it's drivers which are probably the most bugged software on my PC besides BF2.

BF2 is beyond bugginess, the devil himself lives in it.

anyway, what bugs are you experiencing in the drivers? I've never really seen any.

I think wreck is talking about the bugginess of the drivers in general, not just in bf2. I use superior nvidia drivers, so I haven't had the ati experience yet. :p

then you wouldn't really know what you are talking about.

Ati's drivers since the 9800 have been fine, no worse than Nvidia by any means (apart from multi-GPU situations)

Yes I would, I have several friends who all have to use the drivers and they really suck ass. Just because you love ati doesn't mean you have to defend their crappy software. (Btw, the next card I'm getting is prob gonna be x1900xt). Just ask wreck, he loves ati, but he hates the drivers.

You are correct MatDef.

These is just an example of the issues I've had lately. Upon the release of the X1900 series there were no native supported official drivers. The ones on the CD were just butchered 6.1's. The 6.2's were ok but decreased my performance compared to the CD drivers. The 6.3's made this wierd moving wavy lines across my screen as well as a friend who also has a X1900 XT. You could only really see it with a dark background. Had to revert to 6.2, then 6.4's came and gave me as well as others a corrupt boot up screen and major issues with BF2 crashes. The 6.5's finally came out after five months of waiting for a decent driver my prayers were answered. Even with these drivers the small flashing textures appear with BF2 as they have with every other card and ATI driver I've had. Just remember the issues I've had with my X1900 XTX may not apply to older generations of cards.

Why should I have to wait five months to get good drivers for my card after it's released?

I had an x800xl before and all drivers i had for that card, including cat and omega since 6.1, were all without any bugs whatsoever. i'm not some extreme advance user but still play around with settings and whatnots and atleast I have ful confidence in ati's drivers.

having said that i've heard more about problems with nvidias and will probably order a x1800xl because of the feedback here, thx guys, and my own experiences with ati cards:)


the more i read about the x1800xt the more i like it. I've been looking into a cheap x1900xt too but it aint that much of a difference and soon vista and dirx10 will be here...

Question Does anyone know of a test where they test x1800s, x1900s and, for example, 7900gts 7900gtxs?

Question 2:) Is there an ATI manufacturer that gives a similar warranty as eVga? I'd feel much more confident when overclocking if i had a warranty to cover my ass
