Coolbits help please.

Nvidia drivers come with a very nice overclocking program hidden inside, called Coolbits. It is capable of offering you a 25% increase over stock speeds on both your gpu clock and memory, as well as OpenGL, Direct3D, and 3D Antialiasing settings. It is a very nice utility, and this tutorial will show you how to use it.

The first thing you will need to do is unlock the program so you can use it. This requires you to change your system registry, so please back up any data before changing anything in the registry.



Anyway, it recommends backing up date before changing the registry. How do I do this as I'm going to follow the tutorial and see how I go. Thanks a lot!

I dont know if you dont need help anymore or what but....
search coolvbits on google. download it. execute the registry editor and its done. if you want to back it up go ahead, file> export. but its fairly simple.

It says back up my system registry, that's what I want to know how to do.


Edit/Coolbits has now been entered into the registry. I saved in program files. Was that where I should have put it or does it not matter? Also now that I've got coolbits now what? How do I access it? I've got the invidia setting now displayed in my toolbar also. Yeah so now what?

well if you installed coolbits and backed the registry (it doesnt matter to where, as long as you remember really). open up nvidia control panel and use your new tools. this includes overclocking etc.

Go to start-->run-->type in "regedit".

Okay so I'm all set then, so where do I look to overclock my video card?
On the bottom right of my screen where MSN is is my NVIDIA settings, is that where I overclock? If so which part do I look in?

I appreciate you guys showing me this as I'm learning a lot this way.

If your trying to squeeze more out of your CPU to play BF2 at higher settings or whatever, overclocking isn't the way to go IMO, especially if you don't have much experience doing such things.

Download it, extract, open the folder, and click on the coolbits file, it should add itself to the registry. Then go to the nvidia control panel, there should be a new option that says Clock frequency settings. Click the manual overclocking, make sure it's on 3d settings, and click "Detect Optimal frequencies". And you're done.

We're talking about oc'ing a graphics card, not cpu.

Odd, I thought I downloaded it already and it said it added itself to the registry but I don't see it.

Should I download it again? Is it safe to simply delete it from the registry?

EDIT\ I found it! So Just up it a bit and see what happens yeah? At what temperature is it starting to get bad? So far it sits around 41 when I play. I'm a bit nervous as I don't want to fry my pc already. Should I use the detect optimal settings? Also what setting would definately be too high? Not that I'll even remotely push it that high but it gives me some way to gauge where I'm setting it.

Nah, 41 is cool for a gpu, as long as it doesn't go any higher than around 90 you're fine.

You'll know what setting is too high because it'll either lock the computer up, or start artifacting like crazy.

Great thanks but what is artifacting?

Now that I've got this sorted should I overclock my AMD 3800+ Dual? They only run at 2.

One step at a time, lets just work on your gpu right now, oc'ing your cpu isn't nearly as easy. Artifacting is easy to spot, it's when you see weird colors (objects) on your screen, or it looks like it's snowing (when it's not supposed to).
