Bios updates-

Ok, well i havent installed any motherboard updates, or bios updates yet and im just wondering what i need to do... I think with the bios i need to use my floppy drive to update the bios, is that correct? Also here is the bios i got for my abit is7e motherboard

All you do is run the exe.

My Gigabyte one didnt require a floppy because it has some built in thing to update straight from the HD.

Any other BIOS update i have used gave me a self-extracting file that went straight onto the floppy, then i just reset and ran from the floppy and it would go!

i havent upgraded my bios, its 2 years old already..do u have to upgrade ur bios every month? or year?...

There is no set time you should update your BIOS. Just whenever a new one comes out.

For regular people however, never update your bios, unless you *need* a feature that is fixed in the update, or are currently having problems. The possibility of hosing your system is very real, and 98% of the time, bios updates are for hardware compatibility, usually newer CPU revisions, rarely will there be performance improvements, at least nothing noticible.

Not a correction, just a footnote. :) I've hosed a board with a bios update, and let me tell you all, its not fun waiting a month for Abit to RMA back a postage stamp sized bios chip.

You should always read the motherboards website about how to install the BIOS for your particular mobo. Its not that its difficult, but if you make a mistake your could mess up your mobo pretty bad.

o i thought all u need to do is download the bios and install it. or bios upgrade came with hardware and has to be manualy installed on ur mobo?

No, usually you just put the new BIOS on a floppy disk, stick it in, and restart your computer. Some of them may automatically update from there. For mine, I have to go into the bios and select upgrade BIOS and from there it does the job....

Most newer MOBOs can work with a program called winflash, where you can flash your BIOS from windows. Check with your MOBO manufacturer.
