ah good i can finally upgrade my other machine to something decent from its old amd 2800+ barton will just need new mobo/cpu/ram can get a cheapy graphics for it, it wont be running things like bf2

Intel customers have been informed that the company is prepared to cut prices on its Pentium processor range by up to 60 per cent in order to reclaim lost market share from AMD.
According to Micro-Star and Gigabyte, two of Intel's biggest Taiwan partners, the chip maker is planning on announcing the price cuts on July 23rd. The Intel reaction comes as AMD increased its share of the processor market last quarter by 20 per cent for the first time in four years.
According to the Taiwanese companies Intel plans to cut its high-end dual core chip prices by 15 per cent while prices of the Pentium range will see price cuts of 60-61 per cent. AMD also plans to introduce its own price cuts but according to Gigabyte they will not be as impressive as Intel's.
The success of AMD's Dell deal and its aggressive marketing strategies have stirred Intel and analysts attending the Computex show claim a large scale price war is about to begin. Intel has refused to officially confirm the price cuts but the fact that this news comes from Computex suggests that it is reliable.

ummm, why would intel drop their pentium prices by 60%, if they were releasing Conroe on the same day. that would be the stupidest thing ever, because maybe it would get them more sales, but it would DESTROY their conroe sales.

That's what they are doing, all the Netburst Pentiums will be cut.
but why? i mean,i understand they want to regain the market they lost the AMD, but that is the point of conroe. the price and performance of conroe is supposed to gain the market back. if they cut the prices on netubursts, they may sell more of them, but then that means less sales of conroe. and why would they want to do that.

But remember Conroe won't instantly be available on July 23rd. It could be as late as September until we see a steady stream of them.
AMD is dropping their price to match Conroe, but at that time Conroe won't be availiable, so Intel needs to have something to put up against AMD until Conroe is widely available.
Conroe stated to only make up (in this ballpark) 20% ish of Intel's production, going into 2007. That means ~80% will be netburst.
Intel needs to cut prices to differentiate the two product lines, and give people an incentive to buy an older inferior product. Just as people are flocking to the 805 dual core chip, we will see the same effect with older discounted netburst.
Consumers love a good price deal, even if it isnt the fastest chip, getting something for cheap is a major motivation to buy. Think of it as getting "last year's car model" and getting a "really good price from the dealer to clear inventory" 9 out of 10 people I know would be just as happy with a 2005/6 car if they could get a good deal, even if the 2007's are superior.
true, but if I had the money and was building, and saw the netburst for cheap, I wouldn't wait for Conroe to become more widely available before buying and building. However, if the price stayed where it was at, I would be more interested in saving for Conroe.
aslong as Intel doesnt chang their chipsets to what AMD did changing to AM2 people will be more willing to stick with the cheaper option even a discount on dual cores will doit for most people and would surfice for a time,
and with rumours of AMD merging with ATi people can only dream about the 4x4 solution that could be proposed (2x cpu, 2x gpu), something to rival both intel & nvidia
There are rumors of an ATI and AMD merger, but who knows. Right now however, AMD is facing serious capacity issues, and in very short time is going to be holding the short end of the performance stick.
If K8L sucks, this could be a repeat of the semi dark Athlon XP days, after Thunderbird, but only time will tell.

A merge with ATI and AMD would hurt Nvidia since Nvidia and AMD get along so well and make real good chipsets (Nforce4, Nforce5) However that 4x4 thing is just a waste can't wait to see the cost for it might just make my day.
