    AMD AM2 Price drop

Seem that AMD is trying to ramp up the competition.

Reports indicate AMD will cut dual core prices 35% to 50%, Athlon's 20%-30% and Semprons 10%15% the day after Conroe's release.

CHIP FIRM AMD has kicked into price cuts today by slashing prices on 939 and AM2 sockets.

Distributor prices seen by the INQ show that the Athlon 64 3000 will cost $89, the 3200 $99, the 3500 $109, and the 3800 $139. In the last case, that's a 50 per cent drop.

All socket and AM2 sockets are rebated, we understand from sources close to AMD Asia.

dang..lol why dont they do it now..lol illl either get conroe later or a x2 3800 now... if they lowered the price before conroe..it seems like then people would start buying AMD before they buy conroe..

Mwave is refleciting some of these changes already.

      A little bit more:

News shared from 1st tier mainboard manufacturers of taiwan. During Computex Taipei 2006, AMD had held a meeting with those mainboard manufactures to announce their new strategy to against the upcoming Intel price drop and Conroe. AMD decided to drop the price on 24th July, the day after Intel’s drop.

Intel would announce their new architecture based dual core processor Conroe on 23rd July. On the same day, the old Netburst based Pentium D will drop 40% to 60%. It’s sure that the performance of Conroe is better and the price drop has made the manufactures into a deep concern to adjust the ratio of Intel to AMD product solution. Therefore, AMD announced their plan for self saving.

On 24th July, Athlon 64 X2 would drop 35% to 50% to against Conroe, while Athlon 64 would drop 20% to 30% to against Pentium D. To save the low level market, Sempron would also drop 10% to 15%, similar to the drop of Intel Celeron. The final drop would be announced next week. Although AMD maintained a small profit of 4 billion US dollars in the past year, the huge price cut is totally unexpected and risky. In addition to the need of expanding Fab30 and Fab38, the price cut would definitely give AMD a great financial pressure. Yet it is the last weapon to AMD right now. The only hope is the completeness of Fab36 in this year, with 65nm process to raise the productivity and lower the cost.

Main board manufacturers welcome to the price cut. But they are still more optimistic to the upcoming Intel platform and just looking forward to the response from Intel. Intel takes the advantages of their resources and technologies in the war, AMD have no way but price cut to against Intel till the ready of AMD K8L architecture.

Looks like I'll be jumping on the dual core bandwagon sooner than expected.

True, I guess we should start thanking intel for this.

It's based on the xpress 200 chipset, so I think it's s939. Did they make any s754 versions?

So, since they are going to be that cheap, would a dual be worth it yet?
