FPS Question?

Okay how do I read my fps display?
It sits about 50.1/16.00 in combat and higher or lower depending on what's going on. What I gave here would be say squad combat.

Is this good?

To read your FPS you can get fraps, and keep that minimized whilst in a game and it'll show your FPS in one corner of the screen. I'd say 40FPS+ is playable.

The first number is your fps, the second one is the time between refreshes (in ms, I think that's correct but I don't know for sure).

Okay then if I get a bit of lag with low ping and an FPS like that it's probably the server itself correct?

It's the server, or if it's "studdering" it's due to your lack of ram, and system performance.

For BF2 and most games there are three kinds of lag:

-Internet based lag, basically not enough data can be sent/recieved. High ping is indicitive of internet lag.

-Graphics lag, low frames per second make a choppy hard to play experience.

-System lag, this can contribute to low FPS, but usually it means everything play fine for 30 seconds, maybe a minute or two, then randomly all of the sudden massive chop and studdering, then after a few seconds it goes away. This will repeat every time you play, in a random fashion.


To fix the first get a better internet connection, or play on better servers. Fix the second with lower graphics settings, and to fix the thrid get more ram, a faster computer, or lower some of the texture and graphics settings. System lag is usually lack of system ram, in the case of BF2 1GB of ram is not enough to run all high settings.

My PC doesn't even get smooth gameplay anymore. If the game runs like crap it might be your system or it might be the game sucking.

If your game suddenly stutters really bad for a few seconds and you hear your hard drive making a bunch of racket, its because you don't have enough ram and its having to access your hard drive, or your computer is trying to do something else while you play.

take your headphones off first...

And it doesn't happen all the time, just when your game completely locks up for a few seconds. Once I got 2 Gigs. of memory it is a rare appearance. Only happens when windows is trying to install updates while I'm playing BF2.

Put your glasses on:p , I have 2 gigs, and I have even tried 2.5 gigs and its still the same. Incidentally, my friend's 1 gig Intel machine running a 6600 vanilla OCed gets similarly low performance in BF2.
