Run a widescreen monitor at a widescreen res other than native in BF2?

A friend of mine that I play with just got his widescreen LCD around the same time I did.

His system specs are rather poor (e.g. FX5600 yuck!), so BF2 struggles at the native widesceen 16:10 aspect resolution of 1440x900.

We have been TRYING and trying to get BF2 running at ANY other 16:10 aspect widescreen resolution and each attempt results in a brief splash screen, and then desktop.

He has the Viewsonic VA1912WB 19IN LCD Monitor Black Widescreen 1440X900 8MS 500:1

He is running BF2 v1.3 and has updated his video and monitor drivers.

He has also tried deleting the contents of My Documents\Battlefield 2.

    Any thoughts?

    Is this even possible?

PS - I tried running my widescreen monitor (Samsung 215TW) at a widescreen res other than native (1680x1050) and, I too got the same problem.

    I don't think this answers your question(16:10?), but I run mine at 1280 x 960@75 for BF2 - Acer AL1916W. Great Frames at this setting and I have a EVGA6600Gt-PCi-e 128

      But that's a 4:3 res...

I think he tried that one because it is selectable in BF2 and it worked..but it is not widescreen.

I run the same Viewsonic monitor and have good success with very little stretching or cutting off. It comes down to editting your command line as well as a minor adjustment to the FOV (field of view).

        My command line is this:
        "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900

In C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Settings in the file VideoDefault.con (open with Notepad) I have this line changed to:
        renderer.fieldOfView 1.19998661089239

The (above) number came from a program that calculates aspect ratio. I'm sure you could use 1.20 if you don't cut and paste.

I play on a ranked PB server and have not gotten a kick, etc. using these settings. I certain you make the FOV too big and you'll get the boot.

Once you make these adjustment/command line change DO NOT do anything to your in-game resolution settings. These will take priority.

I sure wish we didn't have to resort to "rigging" the game to use widescreen...

FYI, I got all the info from this site/thread:

Hmm..I found this tutorial and it SEEMS to be what I'm looking for, but I cannot add ANY custom resolutions

This tutorial assumes a number of things. They are:

You are using an nVidia video card that has a built-in scaler (the Geforce 6800nu and all later cards have one, not sure about earlier ones).
You have the latest Forceware drivers installed.
You are running Windows XP Home or Pro, with SP2 installed.
          Your monitor is an LCD.
You are using a DVI-D cable with your monitor.
You are trying this on a game whose method is either .ini or Native.

First of all, do not do this if your goal is to PLAY games at a high resolution. The results will not look pretty. Do this if you want to benchmark or take screenshots (the screenshots will look perfect).

Now for the how-to. First, right-click your desktop and click properties. Go to settings, advanced, and click the tab that shows your graphics card name. On the frame that pops out, click "Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates." Uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot support." Move the screen resolution slider and look for all of these resolutions, making a note of the ones that do not appear:

          1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, 1920x1200

If any do not appear, click the "Add" button. Enter in each resolution manually, and click "Add." When all are added, click OK.

Now click "nView Display Settings" on the pop-out frame. Click "Device Settings >>" and "Device Adjustments." Set the scaling to "Display adapter scaling." Click OK. If this makes your screen look distorted, set it to "Monitor Scaling" AFTER you're done taking screenshots/benchmarks, but remember to set it to "Display adapter scaling" again next time you want to do this. OK your way out of the dialog.

My post (above) will work with any custom resolutions....read the thread at the bottom of the post.:)

Note: If you use ASE or Q-Tracker you have to put the editted command line in the executable path for it to woirk connecting to a game via those two.

I also added the same command line to the Special Forces icon and it works for me there, too.

Re: Run a widescreen monitor at a widescreen res other than native in BF2?

We ARE using the command line +szx and +szy options. That's how we are running BF2 at our native widescreen resolutions.

We're looking for a way for him to run his monitor at a NON-native widescreen resolution.

              Preferably: 1168x730

              but
              Code:
              "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1168 +szy 730
              results in a CTD

Yea i tried that code, caused CTD my reso is 1280x800. I also tried changing the reso in the video.con file. Then in desteration deleted it. Still no help.

Re: Run a widescreen monitor at a widescreen res other than native in BF2?

Well, I found out the reason why I couldnt' add a custom resolution...

I'm running the v91.28 drivers with the new nVidia console. I have it set to 'Classic Console view' and it won't let me add new resolutions. I changed it to the new console view and then it let me.

Then I could run BF2 in any resolution I like (sometimes with not pretty results).

My friend STILL hasn't tried this yet, but I'll post back here when he does with his results as that was the reason for my original post.

Ok..my friend finally tried this and he gets 'The custom resolution cannot be added' no matter what resolution he enters.

He's running the latest from nVidia: 84.21

I'm guessing it's his old FX5600 video card that can't handle it.

It wouldn't be so bad if his monitor had a 4:3 setting so that he could play 1024x768 with black bars on either side.

hmm im wondering if that Field of view editing will actually work. A lot of people have said it doesn't work. I'll take some screenshots and compare.
