Firstly, I think I should give you my specs. Here is an image of the dxdiag results:

By the way my graphics card is an AGP Radeon X800 Pro 256bit 256mb.

Right now I have all my settings on low, with a resolution of 800x600 72Hz (my monitor supports much more) and I get crap performance, I mean when I move around and look around it runs very laggy and it's definately not internet lag. I remember being able to play the demo with everything on medium and textures on high and it ran perfect. Now, PLEASE tell me this is a problem with this new 1.3 patch, PLEASE say it's true. My PC isn't screwed is it? By the way this problem is worse when i'm moving around alot, i.e. a vehicle, it's horrible and I know my PC can handle games better than this!

simila to my old rig but i had a 6600gt,and yes it was slugish a times,so i got a extra 512 ram.

by looking at ur chip and the ghz rating,its not a barton core but a older amd(i sold one to mem8 ages ago)

its a 266fsb chip,i upgraded to a 2600+333fsb after i sold the chip and thats what i played bf2 on until las week when i got a amd64 3200+ venice core,and the differnce is amazing.

if you dont want to upgrade then get more ram.
on the specs u have shown 1gb wont be enough try 1.5 or higer.

take it off 72hz refresh for one.... thats an interlaced rate meaning it only refreshes ever other line on your screen each pass.... set it to 70 or 75..... only go in denominations of 5, Good Luck!

its not the most economical suggestion, I realize but a new motherboard/CPU and an extra gig of ram would help you the most.

Get a decent AMD Socket 939 motherboard (that has AGP for your video card, make sure its AGP and not PCIe. Some have both, those are nice.

Then get yourself an AMD 3700 San Diego and 2 gigs of Patriot Memory RAM. (Made in America and VERY affordable).

Slap in your existing video card and other stuff and you will be shocked. (Make sure your PSU is up to the task, 400 watts plus)

I have a p4 2.4 and BF2 was laggy before adding another gig of ram. With 2 gigs it runs like a completely different game. I played at 800 x 600 with everything set on medium. View distance maxed. Never lagged and visuals were pretty good. Just upgraded to from an ATI 9700 XT to an evga 7800 GT OC. Still looking for the sweet spot with card, but it is way better than the one i had. I am gonna build a new PC when UT2K7 comes out.

Right, so basically I need a new motherboard and processor and an extra 1gb ram? Ok, well I think my ram might be PC2700 (not completely sure, might be 3200, how do I find that out by the way?), so if I get a new motherboard then surely it'd be 3200 and what if I have 2700? That means spending double the money and having to get 2gb of 3200! Also I am totally skint, I have NO spending money right now, so getting new components just like that will be fun... (sarcasm)

Ok, I have something VERY comparable, (see under sig), and my sytem runs bf2 all on medium, a couple things on high, 1024x768, with no lag, no problems at all. Your vid card is fine, the x800's actually have better ram (ddr2 vs ddr1) and are 256bit vs. the low end x1xxxx cards.

I would say part of your problem lies w/1gb ram. When I moved to 2gb I got a substantial performance increase. And if that 1gb is pc2700 its even more a reason to upgrade. I got my 2gb of GSkill for 150 after rebate.

I've ordered an extra 1gb 3200 ram, so I'll have about 1.8gb. I'll have 1x512mb, 1x256mb and 1x1gb. So will that stop my problems, or just stop them from being SO bad?

it will help but PC snobs will advise you that RAM performs best when the modules (sticks) all match. 2x 512 instead of 1x512 and 2x256 for example, 2x 1gb instead of 1x 1gb & 2x 512.

More RAM is never a bad thing really but if you get weird stability problems, take out the smallest module (the 256 in your case) and go with 1.5 gigs.

I have a 3700+ San Diego with 2 gig of G.Skill RAM, and it's sweet... Throw in the 7800GTX and a 560W power supply and it kicks some serious ass when I run BF2.

But I have to say I agree with the OP - you shouldn't need those specs to get semi-decent settings to run smoothly. I'd say another gig of RAM would be the best bet. 2 gigs seems to really help BF2 as far as I can tell from my own experience with an older rig and also reading posts by others. A full system overhaul will be pricey, so just sticking to the RAM for now might give the best result for a minimum outlay.

With the new patch, I'm getting poor performance as well. Everything was fine on all previous patches, not a dog of a machine Alienware. BF2 is now unplayable.
