How do I overclock?

I've never done it before and would like to slightly overclock my processor and graphics card. I know I will have to be careful but I suppose I might as well start learning how to use my pc properly with everyones help.

Okay where should I start and how closely will I have to watch temperature? Also how do even do that?

Someone also told me you can make Battlefield a priority in terms of memory useage. I assume this is true so how do I do that?

I wouldn't bother o/c-ing your CPU, its plenty fast enough, and you will not see any difference with the dual-core. So I recommend O/C of the video card.

1)Google-search for Guru's "Coolbits" registry entry (just type guru and coolbits)

2)Install as directed, reboot

3)Now right click on desktop, select properties, select nvidia, should now see OVERCLOCK tab...open it and click accept when you agree that it can harm your vid card, void warranty, bla, bla, bla...move tab to manual overclocking...start playing around with it (go slow, and only adjust under 3d, DO NOT ADJUST 2D)...test changes each time, going up about 5 points each time until failure. Save. Try it out in-game. If you like it, and there are no problems (pixelation, heat, etc) go back in and check the box "Apply settings at startup". Enjoy!

BTW the newest 90's nvidia drivers have overclocking capabilities built in. I dont have those though(still using the 80 somethings:p )

Try it out in-game. If you like it, and there are no problems (pixelation, heat, etc) go back in and check the box "Apply settings at startup". Enjoy!

Last time i oc'd my video card to much, everything turned green :cry:

I run a X2 3800, and as stated there is really no reason to overclock it..

Nah, not worth the money. Just use speedfan, or dl asus probe (its on their website).

The best way to use this website is to skip through to the part when he starts doing the actual overclocking. Use the first chunk of pages for reference to go back for later. If you try to read the entire thing from page 1 to the end its going to take a very long time!

Um, no they don't :)

I usually use detect optimal frequencies with coolbits and lower/raise from there. going up 5mhz at a time will take forever, And it's not going to kill your card if you overclock too high or get a blue screen. Just don't keep it at those clocks if it does :)

If you want more voltage for more overclocking, http://sg.vr-zone.com/?i=3330 Although you may want aftermarket cooling for that. And the lead will come right off with an eraser, it's not like you're grinding down the resistors, just putting some lead on top of them.

for most people 2.0 is plenty fast enough for 99% of the games..

now on the other hand some of us are different...

Absoultely correct. Unless they are running 1024x768 and LOWER resolutions AND no Antialiasing and low Anisotropic filtering, medium quality settings etc...CPU speed means virtually nothing today.

I hear the sweetspot for gaming is 2.2-2.4. If you overclock the right way all your going to gain is performance and an addiction. I say go for it. Just take it a step at a time.

Make sure you run two instances of prime95. I dont like my venice going over 45-50c but I think dual cores run a little warmer.
