How bout trying to download a bootable live version of Linux and running that to see if it gives the same problem? That way you can tell if its your windows install or your hardware. I feel you have corrupt data somewhere but you need to cover all bases.

Also, weirding me out, my computer freezes randomly lately and I'm working on that, which is why I want to reinstall windows. My usual fix a freeze is restart button. Last night it froze so I restarted it per usual, and this time it came up with the windows profile for the original owner lol wtf!??! He had deleted and cleared everything off this computer before he gave it too me. I tryed out the CD drive and it worked with a Audio CD on sonic stage.. (I also found 27GB in music on there). Then I shutdown because it felt like going through someones letterbox.

It's a giga raid, I think it opened the other 80GB harddrive I wasn't using.. randomly

So that lets me kknow the CD device works properly, just um windows is rooted ..?

If you're lucky it'll just be windows that's rooted.

If you're wanting to run a live linux CD, Knoppix is the most popular:

Running one would tell you if your hardware is stuffed. But I would suspect you will need to reinstall windows, sounds as if there are some serious issues. Its always best if you inherit or buy a PC from someone else to install windows from scratch, who knows what nasties the previous owner might have left on there.

If you want to keep your data, partition your hard drive into 2 lots, move all the stuff you want to keep over to the new partition, then reinstall windows over only one partition - then your data is still available (note any programs will need to be reinstalled). Its always a good idea to partition your hard drive, keep all the music/movie/etc files on one partition and your operating system and applications on the other. That way if things turn to custard for you in future you can zap your windows install and still have everything else.

I've just reinstalled windows. Froze once while installing but continued from there again after restart. Ran the drivers installs fine. Then tryed Audigy 2 ZS from the disc and it crashed after complete install at the Restart now screen. I was suspicous this was causing everything a while back but had stop errors saying it was my video drivers. ANyway I've pulled my sound card out and going to take it into a tech shop and see how goes. My computer has crashed since, or frozen, so I should be ok.
Now, how do I get speakers to work without a sound card? (Never had to before..)
I'm taking the 2nd harddrive into the shop with me to see if he can wipe it for the ex owner, after that I will do so. Like he used to. Entire hardrive full of it

Update: Can not install ATI drivers because I can't install Windows framework 2.0, because I can't download windows installer 3.0, BECAUSE it claims I don't have a genuine version of windows XP. DAmn it.

Update: Found a nonvalidate version :) installed ATI.

Pulled out my soundcard because Audigy 2ZS would not install. But I'm still having crashes!? After reinstalling windows... wtf is going on!!??!

I'm taking my computer home and reinstalling the RAM tonight, advised by the original owner. Will also try that think later on

Too bad I didn't see this earlier, could have saved the re-install of Windows. For the Code 41 error the fix is here,

I also agree with the others that it now sounds like you are having a hardware issue, most likely ram or psu.

P.S. Hope you made a paretiton or two to keep stuff on so that the next time Windows takes a dump or you decide to re-install, all your pics and stuff are safe (should still back stuff up occasionally just in case the hard drive goes south).

My guess was going to be along the lines of installing StarForce copy protection from another game or an anti-StarForce product or some CD emulation software of some kind..

My computer could not find the CDRW or DVDRW devices, so I couldn't write anything to disc before reinstalling windows. I finally gave up and reinstalled after I couldn't even log into Safe Mode without it instantly crashing. I didn't have the chance to partition the harddrives as I could not find the other Harddrive. Since reinstalling windows it has found the other one, and the disc drives :). Will be burning downloads to disc soon.

Ok, I just got my computer home from work where it was running stable. Plugged it all in, turned it on, waited.. It came up with windows cannot be opened. Tryed last config and it freezess, tryed normal log in and it freezes, tryed safe mode and it freezes. Yay. I'm screwed.

Update: Sending to computer Tech to open up and do it, I give in.

Ok, all the computer Tech guy did was take out 1 of my 512Mb Cosair sticks of RAM and the machine ran fine. Picking up tomorrow to ask further questions as to why it ran for 2 years without any problems. And going to miss having 1024Mb Dual RAM for a while..

Finished. Deciding to forget about running the Dual 512Mbs anymore. The single worked absolutely perfectly. No crashes, no freezes, no lag, no trouble whatsoever. I'm actually gobsmacked.
And, of course, just to push my luck I thought I would try for the first time in 3 months. Fully installed BF2, then downloaded the 1.3 Full patch whilst burning music, then updated. Then started.. no crashes and actually opened.. retrieved account with general long wait.. clicked multiplayer, chose server Xtra ranked 24/7 Karkand, and Join. Start map... played for 3hours with no crashes, no lag, no glitches... I'm in heaven haha

Just to gloat on TOP of that, after not playing for 3 months, I got in top 3 ratings every game. The first game I got first place and wrote WTWF 1st!? HOWTF I played like sh*t! :p

EDIT: I might ask him why the RAM caused/ fixed the issue.. but having to much fun for now..
