Need urgent help

Ok i have a problem, for some reason when i go to run a defrag i get an error message like this.


Ive also been having system instability. Sometimes when im browsing for folders the window will just close and sometimes my desktop background will go away and a white background will appear and i have to restore it, anyone know why this is happening? Do i have to run Chkdsk/f? and if so does anyone know how?

Here is how to run chkdsk>
Start>Run
type in CMD
this will open the command window
type in chkdsk /f
and that will check for errors on your drive.

I tried what u said but it says it cant run because the drive is in use and it asks me if i want to run on next startup. So i say yes but it doesnt seem to do anything. I still get the same error, any one else got an idea?

I asume your running XP?
If you are when u restarted did it give you a screen telling you it is running chkdsk?

Yes i am using xp, and no it didnt so i went to mycomputer>right clicked on c> properties and went to check now. When i do that it says cannot open volume for direct access when i restart.

try what you done then only on F drive as it is telling you to run it on F.
If that doesnt work try booting in safe mode and running a chkdsk.

I looked at the f in the chkdsk command and though it was the drie my bad....
try this chkdsk /r

Its still giving me the same error when i go to run>cmd and type in chkdsk /r,cannot open volume for direct access

Open my computer, Then right click on the drive in question and select properties. Then select the tools tab. Then where it says error-checking click the check now button, and it will tell you that it cannot check your disk untill you reboot, So reboot the PC and dont touch anything, It will check your drive for errors before it loads up window's. Also have you checked for Viruses and popup programs that could be using your drive?

Try

chkdsk /x /f

(yes you can enter 2 or more switches)
It asks u if u want to run the chkdsk on next reboot. (enter y and reboot)
U can also enter

help chkdsk

(or any other command) if u want to see all switched and a description. A switch is the "option" behind a command like /f or /x. They are not drive letters. Please check "help chkdsk" for further reference

Alright ive fixed the problem, called microsoft support (lmao) and they helped me sort out things. Thanks for all your help, btw sorry Laike.
