    ATI or nVidia for BF2?

So, this is more of a general question, and is not meant to spark a flame war.

I'm looking at upgrading to a high-end video card and I'm wondering about the pros and cons of ATI and nVidia.

First off, the cards in question are an ATI X1900XT, or an nVidia 7900GTX.

I know that BF2 is made for nVidia cards, but doesn't the newer X1900 series overpower the 7900 series?

Also, I hear people say that the ATI Catalyst drivers are crappy compared to the nVidia GeForce drivers. Is there any truth to this with high-end cards, and if so, what does that exactly mean?

    Thanks for any help.

The game is not made for edither card, Nvidia just paid for the advertisment more or less.

X1900XTX edges out the 7900GTX by a bit.

ATI drivers are crappy, it just means it's harder to get the setting and such to your liking with ATI cards. The interface is clucky hard to use and buggy.

There are 'after-market' optimised drivers for both cards, if the Ati drivers are what are concerning you. If you are going to buy either I would suggest buying a retail card from either Nvidia or ATI. I have had problems with OEM, or 3rd party cards utilizing the ATI or Nvidia chips.

Awesome, thanks guys, that definitely helps.

lil_jimmy_norton, so you're saying that games are not optimized for use with one card or another? I honestly didn't know that, and that's definitely interesting to me. All this time I thought that whenever you see the nVidia logo video at the start of a game, like in Call of Duty 2, etc, I thought that it was specifically made to take advantage of nVidia cards. Likewise with Half-Life 2, I thought you'd only get the best looking visuals by using an ATI card for that game. But you're saying it doesn't matter.

That definitely sheds some light on my understanding of video cards. Thanks.

Personaly i would say Nvidia I have played the game on both a Nvidia 6800GT and on a ATI x850.
while the x850 was a little faster than the 6800GT the image quality of the Nvidia card was beter.
And i really regretted upgrading to that card.

Now im back to Nvidia with a XFX 7900GT XXX and im really impressed by this card.
It has some nice features like "gamma correct antialiasing" and "transparency antialiasing"
(for fences, trees and grass and it looks amazing)

If u can afford it i would really reccomend it
I bought it for 398 euros and it is worth every penny.

Well i would go for ATI the modded drivers like Omega and Warcats have have improvements sicne that the catalyst drivers do not do much.

I prefer Nvidia because of their price:performance mid range cards and drivers. But I am no fanboy of either, whichever is better for the buck at the time I get. When 6800GS came out, it crushed the X1600XT, so I got that instead for a great price.

Depending on the resolution you like playing at and how much you want to spend, make your decision on that. I'd go for a 7900GT right now if I was looking for a card.

Re: ATI or nVidia for BF2?

I played the first 10 months of BF2 with an ATI X800XL. It worked nicely, but I had to update or roll back drivers routinely depending on what other games I played along the way.

The last two months of BF2 have been with an NVidia 7900GT and the game is noticably smoother. But the nicest feature is the drivers. They were released in March and work flawlessly on EVERY game I own through today. Plus I have the added incentive of potentially adding a second card for SLI performance.

My vote goes to NVidia after using both. I just do NOT miss driver rollbacks and endless releases of new drivers - maybe 10-1 versus NVidia who seems to get it right the first time with each driver.

Like jimmy said, for the ultra high end right now ati is king. Only problem is they have some of the worst drivers around.
