Is performance ram such as corsair, kingston & crucial really worth it, given that it is so expensive ?

Its only worth it if you overclock and wanna squeeze all the juice out of your rig.

All rams now come with lifelong warranty, so unless you're a performance and benchmark freak, there's not much point getting high-end rams.

really, only for overclocking. it has better timings and speeds and a heatsink so you can get better speeds etc out of it. if you arent going to be overclocking then realistically its not worth it, unless you live by the term "better safe than sorry". but really, value is good for even gaming.

Some of the high-end RAM isn't for overclocking, but have very tight timings, but are less overcloackable.

E.g. 2x1GB moduels are not as low in timimgs as 2x512MB, and it it is easier to find overclockable 512MB RAM moduels that will keep their tight timings at high OCin, than 1 GB sticks that can do similar.

Often, last time I checked, 2x1GB modules either were good at tight timings or relaxed timings but much higher overcloackability.

well the thing is, when you put the ram in, the ram is automatically set to the speed of the mobo which is already set. for instance I have 4x512mb stick, each stick it DDR400 2-3-3-6 timings, but at first in the mobo it is 333mhz 2.5-3-3-7. you have to "overclock" them to their tight timings.

Couldn't that depend on the mobo?

Often the it reads the timings from SPD and set the intended timings. Not sure though it has been a while since mine was at default setting.

Here is a simple way to factor things:

With the money saved by buying value ram instead of fancy ram...and applied to a better video card than you would have gotten in conjunction with fancy ram...you will yeild about 10x better performance from the better video card over the fancy ram/lesser card.

I don't really see the point of overclocking either. Once you turn the res to 1024x768 and/or use AA and AF, and other eye candies, CPU speed becomes almost pointless between one or another CPU in most games.

For that article, I compared my s939 3200 to the FX57...the largest difference was 8.5% in ONE game, Serious Sam, which I don't play.

CPU speed only matters if playing in low res, no special settings. Therefore in my opinion there is never a reason to buy the fancy stuff because you have little or no need to overclock.
Which IS the single and only reason the fancy stuff would be needed in the first place, as the others have also agreed.

p.s. overclockers please don't flame me. I'm thinking most of you do/did it as a hobby or learning experience more so than for the performance increase it got you in games.

Do it for the fun of the challenge, and free performance. I bought a $190 3200+ and a $30 heatsink and it outperforms CPU's that were $800-1000 at the time I bought it last year.

Right, but as far as gaming goes...it made little to no difference when AA and AF is used. But for raw ghz speed sensitive programs like encoding/decoding DVD's, sure it made a big difference.

My comment applies to people who game and could not care less about encoding/decoding work, and may not be able to afford more. As far as gaming only goes, the money is better spent on a better card, than it is on fancy ram and $30 coolers. Gaming only.
