    Next Upgrade

Here's my situation. I'm going to a school in August, where I'll be spending a year of my life. I won't get the chance to play there on weekdays, but in the weekends when I come home, I'll have a little game at home, if I don't take the computer with me.

So is worth buying something before this. I've been thinking about a new mouse/keyboard. Also thought about a new soundcard like the X-Fi. What do you think? :)

    Here's my specifications:

    Intel Pentium 4 3.4Ghz
    Kingston 2x1024MB DDR
    Asus P4GPL-X
    Leadtek GeForce 7800GT
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2
    Seagate 120GB 7200RPM
    Chassis and PSU

    Cheers

      Re: Next Upgrade

well, from your specs I would say you're pretty set . The only REALY worthwhile upgrades I would recommend would be an x-fi and, thats about it. your computer is already very very good. the x-fi is worth the money, but if you are only going to be playing on weekends for a short while, think about if it is worth it to you.
as for the mouse and keyboard, i would go with the Logitech g15 keyboard, saitek eclipse or zboard and a mx518 mouse.
other than that you are pretty set.
the only other thing I can really think of is getting an Sli mobo and buying another 7800gt :)

Jep, firstly I think, I will get a new keyboard and mouse. For the keyboard it's definitly going to be the G15. For the mouse, I'm not sure, whether I should get the G7 or the MX1000. I won't buy the MX518, I know, it's a fantastic mouse. But really the G7 can do the work. Also, I don't want wires on my table.

I won't buy an SLi motherboard, because then I have to change my CPU.. (because of my RAM). Also I don't think SLi nor another 7800GT is worth the money. I really don't want to spend money on those things. :)

        Thanks

Oh I forgot. What is the differents between all the different versions of X-Fi. There is both Fatal1ty FPS, Elite Pro, Pro etc.

I guess Fatal1ty FPS is the one for gamers, aka best for me?

they are all very good as far as gaming goes etc.
          here is the differences
          1. extreme music is the basic card, nothing else. it still games VERY VERY well and hte sound quality is still very good, but all you get is the card and the software basically.

          2. the platinum, is the same exact thing as the xtreme music, except is comes with a little 5.25" front panel, which you can plug your headphones and things into.

          3. the fatal1ty is the same thing as the platinum (front panel) but this card comes with 64mb of "xram" on it. its basically RAM, on the card dedicated for the sound. with the other cards, they run off the 2mb XRAM (compared to 64 on the fatility) and system ram. the sound quality of the fatility is just the same as the other cards. no games today really use the xram at all, so paying extra money for something that doesnt really help is kinda pointless.

          4. the elite pro, is the same as the fatality, excpet it comes with gigantic thing that sits on top of your computer, or anywhere I guess that looks like this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...ard+%2D+Retail
and its mainly for people who do recording etc.

most people say just ge the xtreme music because its the best deal. I got the platinum because I needed t he front panel, but would have gotten the xteme music if I didnt need the front panel. the fatility is cool and all, and probably gives you an extra 1-2 FPS over the others, but really no games use it, and if you have 2GB of ram already then its not worth it.

            Re: Next Upgrade

Thanks! That really did clear everything out for me.

Then I'll go with the Xtreme Music one. (If I buy one)

For pure curiousity, what did you need the panel for? :)

              Re: Next Upgrade

The only sane X-Fi options are the Extreme music or Platinum. The X-ram is useless and the elite pro is a waste of money.

Anyone looking at an X-Fi should get extreme music unless they want the live drive.

                  Re: Next Upgrade

I bought the platinum for the front panel for a couple reasons
                  1. I needed my headphones to plug into the front as they wouldnt reach the back that well, and it would be a bitch to take them out and put them in for speaker use and to take them to LANs and stuff.

                  2. it makes my rig look just a tiny bit more pimp, and my e-penis about 1 inch bigger.
