The gain will be negligable, in fact the x2 would be a little faster because its clock is 200mhz higher. Bf2 isn't really a cpu intensive game anyway. If you want to oc, get the opty. If you don't want to, get the x2.

So are opteron's basicly built to be overclocked or something? Seems like a lot of people mention opteron and overclocking in the same sentence.

Also, the Opty (im quite sure) runs cooler, so that will help in general, which gives it the better overclock. But as Mat said, if you are planing to stay at stock speeds, get the x2.

The Opty's are built for servers, so they are made to run cooler, giving a beter overclock, as i said above, they are also tested far beter and more thourally, thus helping even more to gain a better more stable oc.

If you were talking about them both at stock speeds, the difference is so marginal that you wouldn't notice it, at least in BF2. The opteron has more L2 cache, but the 3800 clocks higher. If you OC'ed it the opteron would likely get higher. If your considering moving from the 3800 to the 165 I would say its probably not worth it.

They run the same as the x2's, they're just held to a higher production standard (they are desgined to be used in servers). Since they're higher quality they're usually able to oc to higher clocks with lower voltage.

Opterons are for people who OC, have good hardware and know what they are doing.

The extra cache of an Opteron adds some performance, but the combination of 1MB cache + strong possibility of a "cherry picked" higher quality lower voltage chip makes them appealing for overclocking.

The x3800+ is faster in everybenchmark due to clockspeed advantage, and will probably OC near an Opteron 165. We are talking the 2.6gh-3ghz range on air depending on hardware and luck of the draw.

For $30 it's worth the money if your overclocking, but the X3800+ is going to perform about as fast even when overclocked and will provide you with a 10x multiplier.

Yeah looks like that is the case, however they do run by default with less voltage, still isnt a very significant power consumption boost.

My opty eats a hell of a lot less voltage than my Athlon 3200+ did at the same frequency. And don't underestimate the cache. The only downfall is that the opteron 165 costs considerably more. DO not get the opteron 170 unless the headache of a 9x multiplier is too much for you to handle. Some people think the 170 overclocks better but besides bragging rights, a couple hundred megahertz difference really isnt noticable. As far as running cooler, I'm really not the best person to ask. I removed the IHS from the 3200+ and was hitting around 20 degrees celcius at a 2.8oc, but now I'm idling around 28c with an ihs on (with the opty). Actually doesn't bother me though because I haven't had any problems and I'm on water, so I know the processor won't get to the point where the heat will affect peformance.

If I were to buy again I'd get the AM2 4000+ at around $320. It's pretty much an Opteron 170 with DDR2 support for $80 less.

Well those few more MHz. you can gain from the OC Opteron can better be invested in another core. For BF2 those few MHz. won't make a difference, perhaps 1 FPS, the second core though will make a big difference in the future games. And it allows you to run Fraps (for example) a lot smoother next to BF2.

I use Fraps next to BF2 with my Athlon 64 3000+ to see my FPS and take screens. How much performance from BF2 does Fraps actually take? Anything that should make me consider using Fraps or not?
