I've searched the forum and most of the help assumes a certain level of knowledge that I don't have as this is my first PC game.

I want to set up VOIP but can't figure out how. I have a mic(non-USB) that I use for Teamspeak and Ventrilo. Will that work for VOIP or do I need a headset? Whenever I try to set it up, I get no sound at all out of it, but it works fine for Teamspeak and Ventrilo.

Hopefully, someone out there will have the patience to help me. And if so, please remember to talk to me like yesterday was my first day on the internet.

k first off welcome to TotalBF2.

I assume ur trying to configure voip over on the game. If your mic works for Teamspeak it WILL work with VOIP ingame as they use the same interfaces. I dont know what u mean about not hearing anything. If you see the persons name appear and you dont hear them its either your problem or them. But if TS works then VOIP should work, go into the audio settings in the game and adjust some of the levels.

Maybe some more description into you problem maybe helpful, what youve tried ETC?

I've tried to set it up through the game and I've also ran set up through the .exe file from my hard drive. When I do the mic test, there is nothing. I adjust the levels and configure it every possible way, but there is a setting somewhere deep in the settings on my game or computer that is preventing me from using VoIP. I would really love to use my mic.

What I mean by can't hear anything is that the level indicators don't move when I speak into my mic when I try to set it up. It's like the mic is inoperable when I know it isn't because I've used it before.

ok start the game, and the do Alt + tab (the key above the caps). This will return you to the desktop.

Then in the bottom right hand corner there should be a speaker (see Volume1.JPG to see what i mean). Right click on this and then click open volume control. a box should appear, click options in the top left hand corner and select propertise.

Another box will appear in that box select recording and then in the sub box below make sure microphone is selected (see Volume2.JPG for screen shot).

Then click Ok and it should reappear with the box with loads of volume levels. Find microphone and raise the bar to the top. This has now set you microphone sensitivity. You can adjust this bar if its to loud or distorts. IF its to quiet still click on advanced and click on mic boost. (see volume3.JPG)

I went through and did everything exactly as specified. Also, I right clicked the volume icon and selected Adjust Audio Properties. From there I went to the Voice tab and ran test hardware....and nothing. I also tried to run the mic test under the options tab in BF2.

I fired up Teamspeak and the mic wouldn't work there either. This happened once before, then I was able to use it again but I don't remember the details. To verify that the mic isn't broken, which I'm positive it isn't, I plugged my USB headset in and repeated everything to no avail, even Teamspeak.

Something is up with my sound card settings...that's the only thing I can think of at this point.

Any suggestions?

Wat is you sound card, it should tell you this in settings of teamspeak. Tell me what it says in the primary in the imput and out put devices.

Also go to the control panel and select sound speech and audio devices, click sounds and audio devices. A box will appear make sure all there is a device in the drop down boxes under audio and voices. Even better tell me what is in there too!

I have a Dell XPS 400. 2.8 Gig, 1 gig RAM with RADEON X600 256MB HyperMemory.

In device manager under Sounds, Video, and game controllers, it says:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Vidoe Codecs


I remember downloading a boatload of codec files. Have I messed something up or changed something? I can't tell which one is actually the sound hardware because isn't that SigmaTel nothing but codec software?

Any other system info you need?

k it appears some where things have got alittle messed. Unistall every codec to do with sound and put just ur sound card drivers on. One of those codecs i think is interfearing with it!

That's what I was thinking, but I didn't know where to begin. I uninstalled Ace Mega CodecsPack and ogg codecs. I'll be back later to run the set up again to see if it works. Is there anywhere I can go to ensure that my stock sound card is the default?

Ok, so I can go to test wizard through the volume icon and get playback from my USB headset, but when I go to Teamspeak and Ventrilo, it doesn't work.

I've really screwed something up somewhere...

if uve removed everything to do with sound, some settings may of been changed to default. Just check all the basic settings in the vloume box etc!

Ok, I'm not really sure how to do this. I can't tell what is my sound card driver and what is a codec.

When I plug the USB headset in and right click on the volume icon to run the voice set up, I actually get "USB Headset" in the drop down menu with SigmaTel Audio. It also shows up under the input and output for TeamSpeak. It tests successfully, however, when I load the game and run the mic test under the Audio options screen, nothing happens.

When I go to "Hardware" tab in the sound properties, here is what is listed that is associated with sound:

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device


Did all these come with my computer? How do I know which ones to get rid of? Under the "Audio Codecs" properties it lists the codecs individually. If it doesn't take a special program, I could take a screen shot and upload it so you can see what all I have.
