CD/DVD drive

looking for a CD/DVD burner. i had a lite-on cd burner, but that died out on me, so im looking to replace it with one that can burn DVD as well.

was wondering what some of you guys have/recomend. whats are some good brands, and anything specific i should be looking for?

been browsing around on newegg, incase anyone knows of one good on there to link me too.

I have this, it will burn anything you put in it.

CD-R, DVD+/-R, DL, DVD-RAM, and Lightscribe.

Lite-on is good for slightly cheaper drives, and NEC has a good rep for better quality. Whatever you do, dont spend more than $35-40 on a top end DVD+/- burner. If you go for one of those $100 drives you are ripping yourself off, they offer nothing the average person needs, and are a waste of money.

I have this, it will burn anything you put in it.

CD-R, DVD+/-R, DL, DVD-RAM, and Lightscribe.

it says its OEM...so its just the drive, and nothing else? no cables or software? are all the drivers and such available online?

It says OEM but mine came with a disc with Nero, firmware updater, and documentation on it.

I highly reccomend this drive. DVD-RAM can be useful, and lightscribe is insanely cool, it just takes around 20min to burn the lightscribe image.

Maybe for you... but ummmm I dont know a single person who uses DVD-RAM. It's pretty much a gimick, luckily the prices have come down so that you dont pay much of a premium over a regular drive... but its still pretty useless IMO. It's a really cool technology no one uses.

How it it useless? It's the same as DVD-RW but can be written to many many more times.

The media is more expensive and harder to find, and you cannot use a DVD-Ram disk in 99% of avaliable DVD drives, either to play videos on a TV, or to transfer an archive.

It's fine for personal backups, but you will always need to ensure your computer has a DVD-ram drive, or your SOL and cant get to the data.

In the short term there is nothing terribly wrong with them, but longer term this is like archiving your data to 5 1/2" floppies, good luck reading it in 5 years.

you have yet to steer me wrong everytime i ask a computer question. :p
