LCD monitor problem - won't turn on

Ok..so I finally broke down and purchased an LCD monitor..I have been waiting for the price of 21" widescreens to come down. They finally did (a bit) so I took the plunge.

So here is my n00b question:

Why is it that if I boot my machine up without the monitor turned on, that I cannot seem to turn the monitor on afterward and see the signal?

The ONLY way I can get my monitor working is if it is turned ON when I boot up my machine from cold.

Is this normal LCD monitor behaviour?

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 215TW running at 1680x1050 using a DVI connector.

No I dont think so, but i dont use DVI, I use a DVI to VGA dongle cos my LCD only supports the blue VGA cable. OTherwise I dont really think that is normal.

At least with all the monitors I've used, thats not normal and you might want to contact samsung. Can anybody who owns a samsung say if this is normal or not? *cough*Wreck*cough*

I do not know, but I can tell you I have a sort of similar problem sometimes with my CRT @_@.

Not normal, i use DVI, and i can turn my moniter on and off whenever. When i just booted up 10 min ago, i had my moniter off, then turned it on after the pc was on. You should contact Samsung.

I'm the same as Sir.Blak_Pheonix. I use a 19" LCD with DVI and can turn on and off as I please.

Well, is there really a need to turn it off? As long as it goes into standby mode you shouldn't have to touch the power button until you get a new vid. card or something.

But the simple fact is that it shouldn't be doing it. I would give them a call, they may say they will replace it, or it chould be a simple fix, ie. New driver or one of the menu options.

I've got a Samsung 930b using DVI and it doesn't do that.

Hmm..I have figured out that it happens if the monitor isn't turned on at the time that Windows starts. I can turn it off and on as I please...but if the monitor is off when the computer is logging into Windows..no more signal unless I reboot with the monitor on.

So it sounds like a driver or service or SOMETHING along those lines that is getting initialized upon logging in to Windows that needs the monitor to be ON to get the info it needs to receive signal.

So far, I've had no luck..I thought maybe NVDaemon, nwiz, and NVMediaCenter would fix it, but they did not

Does it have anything to do with the cable?

My monitor came with a DVI-D single link cable and that is what I'm using to connect it to my video card (XFX 7900 GTX).

From the reading I've done, that sounds like the right cable.

I've even updated my monitor drivers from both Samsung and from Windows Update.. neither worked.

Yup..in fact, it only HAS DVI outputs..it doesn't have VGA outs.

Even my old ATI Radeon 7500 supports DVI.

Yeah, Talus thats not normal at all. If you can't get it sorted with drivers then I'd RMA that puppy.

Better yet, I'll just take it back to the store and they'll replace it :)

It has 1 dead pixel anyway :p

There ya go, problem solved. If it happens again at least you'll know it's not the monitor.
