7900gt

Well im building a computer in a couple of weeks and have been set on most of my hardware. Though, I was just looking through some threads and found out that many people are having trouble with the 7900gt's GPU's. Can someone clear this up with me and tell me what is wrong?

I hope this isn't a "big" thing thats going around because I might have to re-consider my GPU to a downgraded video card. (or maybe get up to a GTX but wait a while ...)

People are having major problems with their 7900gt's right now (especially evga). It's gotten so bad that they've actually acknowledged that there is a problem and they are working on fixing it:

I would like to point out that it is certaintly NOT limited to EVGA, it's just that they are the only company that actually allow such talks of defective parts on their own forums. With their recent actions, I would definitely want to stay with eVGA for my next build because their customer support is so great.

I saw on one of the threads at evga that someone called them asking your same question and the rep said that the problem has been fixed with the cards now... although vendors may still have defective ones. I'd go ahead and get it, and if it screws up you can cross-ship RMA it for free with evga.

Don't go with nVidia right now, if you are planning on getting a top of line card that is.... If I were you I'd get one of these...

That is quite a different price range than the $290 7900gt, which can often be voltmodded to perform as well as a 7900gtx

I just got done building my pc today and installed bf2. I bought a bfg 7900gt oc and 2 gig corsair xms ddr 400 ram. Wow, I didn't know bf2 could look so good and run so smooth. I have had no problems whatsoever with the 7900gt so far and am very glad I chose it. The scenery is so lush and there are no jagged shadows, unlike with the ati x800 mobility card I had in my notebook. I am also suprised I had no lag on my wireless connection. I can finally fly helicopters without crashing in 5 secs. Oh yea I bought all my **** from newegg.com, such an awesome store... they delivered in one day and had the cheapest prices I could find.

Wow, sounds good. Im just a little worried that I might get a bad GPU and have to send it back and go threw all the trouble of blah blah blah...

Im maybe thinking a 1800xtx...but then again...maybe I could throw out some more money and go with a 1900....

Just pointing out that you will eventually see the jagged shadows. Not because of 7900gt's recent problems, but because that's just how BF2 works. Just happens sometimes at certain angles between the light, the object with the shadow, and the camera.

I agree. MY 7900GT is GREAT!!!!! My next card will probably be ATI again but I still love my card :)

BAH!!!!

Honestly mate, to me it seems like ATI and Nvidia are so neck and neck that it really comes down to luck of the draw. Sometimes you just get a card that came from a bad batch that's all. My first really good card was an MSI TI 4200, then I went to an ATI 9800PRO and now I'm back to MSI with the 7900GT. No problems so far and I thank my lucky stars that all 3 cards have come out solid enough to last a very long time. :)
