Motherboard Outputs

I have an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe, and on the back of the board, there are two audio outputs, one optical and one RCA. Seeing those, technically couldnt i connect the optical output into my Harmon Kardon A/V reciever in my entertainment sytem? Then i could use the composite output on my video card to go to my tv. But im not sure about the audio, because i have an Audigy soundcard, and i never even installed the AC97 sound drivers for the mobo, which i also disabled anyway in bios. If anyone has any experience with connecting their comp to an entertainment system (video and sound), please help.

It will work just fine, but you will only receive 2 channel (possibly 2.1) sound. You need a dolby digital live sound card to output multichannel with a digital cable.

Though for DVD's and audio already encoded in DD/DTS you can send that to your AV receiver, but games and MP3s will be limited to 2 channel sound.

so even though i have a soundcard, i can run sound out through my motherboard? And also, my reciever has a feature that can convert 2.1 to 7.1. (probably not true 7.1 though )

Yes, but you need to switch your windows options to use onboard sound... or you can use the Audigy (buy a mini jack adapter) and use that to output the digital.. but again only 2.1 sound.

That 1 RCA isn't an RCA...that is Digital Coaxial.

It should be Orange in color if indeed being a Dig Coax input. If you plan on using Digital...simply take your pic which one you want.

Digital Optical cables are generally less expensive than Digital Coaxial, I doubt you'll notice the difference between the 2 performance wise.

Hers a picture of them. At first i thought the coaxial was video out, because its yellow, but the manual says audio. And i remember seeing an orange coaxial on the back of my dvd player, saying digital. So they jsut colored the mobo one wrong.

Yes, I guess the color coding isn't a standard color...normally I see them as Orange, but they can be other colors too apparently.

Also, when you have hardware with both options for Digital inputs, they normally are grouped together as yours are to imply they do the same thing.

Just always do as you did, consult the manual...they know what the inputs are for sure, heh.

I read your manual too and confirm that yellow one is the Digi Coax if you still had any doubts.
