This is an extremely bad hardware bug. I've tried out Battlefield 2 with the demo, and then bought the game, and this occurs with both versions, as well as mods which is likely I guess. When I go to change my controls from default, anytime I click on any of the controls to change it, it causes my hard drive to spin out of control, very loud. This freezes the computer for about 5 seconds while this is happening. If it's not my hard drive then it's a fan, but it sounds very bad and I wondered if anyone else has experienced this issue? My computer is well over required specs, but this sounds like it's damaging my hardware so I have to play with default controls... great bug. I would manually change the controls if it was in plain english but for some cool reason the control config file is cryptic.

My system drive admitably is fairly old, 20 gig drive. But it has been working great for awhile, with no abnormal sounds ever. The drive BF2 sits on is a new 160 gig drive. My machine is an AMD Athlon 64 3400, 1.5 gigs of ram, 256 meg ati x700 pro video card. This problem occured with a different hard drive, when I tried the demo, and at the time I had a different video card as well. The only common hardware was my general system, but the HD the game is on is now different, only the system drive is the same system drive as before. I understand you will probably tell me to replace my system drive with something newer that won't die soon, and I would like to do that sometime, but at the same time, I can't be forced to buy a new drive just to change my controls in BF2. It's like buying a new car to fix the windshield wipers. It seems like the control config could be much more simple, and would solve alot of my problems. Why does it need to access the HD so crazily to set a keyboard button? And why does the config file have to be overly complicated? Is it trying to search for my config file since I don't install the game in the default C drive?
Thanks for your quick replies. I remap alot of my controls to an entirely different setup, and laugh as you may, I use the keypad. I can play default controls too but I feel that my setup is better and am extremely frustrated that I can't do such a simple thing as change my controls. The only thing I can set without the machine freaking out is my sensitivity settings... Thanks for the offer I really appreciate it but I wouldn't make you remap all of those for me.Comment

Certainly sounds like it is your 20 gig drive trying to give up the ghost. Seeing as you already have a 160 gb drive (which while not only being newer, is most likely faster), instead of buying another drive just make a 15-20 gb partition on the 160 for Windows and what not, and then install all your games and any other apps that don't require C.Comment
