Performance, ATI X1600 Pro 512MB

Hi all,

I just bought an ATI X1600 Pro 512MB AGP card. At "medium" settings (+ "high" Texture), 90% viewing distance, no AA/AF, I get about 30fps average on Gulf of Oman single player.

This video card is an upgrade from my previous (Nvidia GEForce FX 5900 128MB AGP), but the performance is no better!

I'm wondering if you could tell me if my bottleneck is somewhere in the rest of my system:

P4 2.8C GHz (Northwood)
1GB DDR400 RAM (Corsair)
7200RPM 80GB Hard Disk (albeit has only 13GB free, and needs defragging)

have you properly uninstalled your old nVIDIA drivers, and than install your ATI drivers correctly?

Yes. Uninstalled software, removed hardware, added hardware, installed software.

I just got a brand new pc, evga 7900gt, 3800 dual core, 2gb ocz ram and I have the same problem. On medium settings in single player with only 32 bots I get 15 to 25 Frames Per Second. But no one seems to know the problem. I downloaded Prime95 but im not sure what to do because I cant leave internet on over night since I have dial up, so Im not sure what to do for Prime95.

i got same problem but it happens in everygame i play.

p4 3.0 Ghz
1gb ram
7900 nvidia
100 gb maxt0r

I get average of 40 fps and no higher then 60 fps in call of duty.
IN bf2 if i run all high or all low if im near people it drops to 30 fps...

hmm maybe its the video card, I should call tech support and ask them what they think, because I should be dominating BF2 on high. Not sure about gender tho, maybe all the new cards that were made recently are bugged >.< just so frustrating buying a 300-500 dollar video cards or 1500+ pc to make, and it runs not even 50% of what it should.

The 9600 series is slower than the 5900 series. The 5900 originally went up against the 9700/9800 series, and the 9600 was more a competitor with the 5600/5700 series.

A 512MB 9600 is a pretty big joke, wow I hope you didnt spend alot of mooney because that video card will never be able to use all the ram on that board.

Honestly i'm surprised your getting the same performance, I would think you would actually be getting less performance than before.

The 9600 series is slower than the 5900 series. The 5900 originally went up against the 9700/9800 series, and the 9600 was more a competitor with the 5600/5700 series.

A 512MB 9600 is a pretty big joke, wow I hope you didnt spend alot of mooney because that video card will never be able to use all the ram on that board.

to all the people wit performance problems and low fps u need to get more RAM dats right more ram go up to 2 gigs if u can i had such a performace boost from 1 gig to 2 trust me

and twsmit u really need to reread wat he was asken about dont u think a 512 mb 9600 sound kinda wierd?

Regardless of my incoherent post, ummm that class of a card does not benefit from 512MB of ram. And a x1600 pro is only marginally faster than what he had before....


9600 < x600 < x1600

They are all very similar in performance. Off the top of my head I know a x600/x1600 performs roughly in line with a 6600GT, but slower by all accounts. A 6600GT is in the ball park of a 9800 Pro, which is in the ball park of a FX-5900.

Therefore he basically did a babystep upgrade and besides decent PS2.0/3.0 support and more graphics memory, it not a huge upgrade.

What exactly is vsycn im seeing people say turn that off. Where is this at?

Edit- Verticle vsycn is off so if thats what vysnc is then thats not my problem. Maybe you could check yours grender, if you have vsync.

All I can say is definetely get more RAM, 2 GB of RAM will probably make a pretty big improvement.

What do you think about a ATI X800XT 256MB? That is another option for me. Is that a better deal for the same price? Or will I be in trouble down the road without PS3.0 support?

It seems to do a great deal for Half Life 2... just nothnig for BF2 :) Well, maybe a little. It's supposedly good for complex-shader games (i.e. FEAR).
