Samsung will be releasing a new hybrid hard drive. Looks promising.

Re: Hybrid Hard Drive
yes, very sexy. 2 or 3 years from now tech like that will probably be standard, and then it will be time to dump my 1/2 terrabyte array for some of those babies. :) -

Yeah, they need to hurry up with some new hard drive tech. It's really the only thing that hasn't caught up.Comment

Yeah. When they are first released they will cost an arm and a leg.Originally posted by twsmityes, very sexy. 2 or 3 years from now tech like that will probably be standard, and then it will be time to dump my 1/2 terrabyte array for some of those babies. :)Comment

Re: Hybrid Hard Drive
Sounds expensive, but useful for laptops. Hard drives are something that I've never really cared about though. My $40 80GB IDE has worked great for years. I still load up BF2 maps faster than 90% people because it's the other components that matter.Comment

The hard drive playes a huge part. It's the weakest link in almost any system.Comment

How is it the weakest link? The speed, capacity, and noise have always been fine.Comment

It's the slowest component in your system. Meaning everything else is limited by it's speed which creates a bottleneck.Originally posted by i made youHow is it the weakest link? The speed, capacity, and noise have always been fine.Comment

It's not something that greatly affects performance with today. It will be a lot more effective once large data rates are needed for future apps.Comment

How is it not? Look and the bandwith that can be used by any other system component. Your RAM and HTT can move gigabytes of data in a second, your GFX card can move gigabytes in a second. Your hard drvie? At best from a 7200rpm drive, you can expect 100MB/s, tops.
If hard drives were faster Windows and other programs would be loaded almost instantly.
How is that not the slowest component?Comment

It really does greatly affect performance. Like Wreck said, it the slowest part of any modern system.Comment

We're not talking about theoretical bandwidth of the interface. I'm refering to the actual speeds of the platter.Originally posted by i made youIt's not something that greatly affects performance with today. It will be a lot more effective once large data rates are needed for future apps.
As drives rotate faster and faster with multiple platters and heads, certain mechanical limitations throw up obstacles to higher performance, effectively increasing the cost per megabyte of storage.
The slow data access caused by the limits of the design are indeed slowing down modern systems. The only way to get past this is a total redesign of the hard drive.
If you have a decent processor and a good amount of ram then you will notice that some programs still take a long time to load. This is because of the limitations of your hard drives rotational speeds. Who wouldn't want windows to boot up in 2-5 seconds, and BF2 to load instantly?
I've heard some talk of flash hard drives, but cost per GB is far too expensive currently.Comment

I was looking at this in terms of something like in game performance, where the current data rate is fine. It definitely has benefits for loading large or inefficient applications.Comment
