BF2 Laptops

Hello,
I need to get a new laptop for college, but I was hoping to find one that could play BF2(on low obviously). I am on a budget so I'll need to go with the least expensive possible. I know this is a diffcult goal, I only want a laptop that will actually play the game I'm not that concerned about getting outrageous performance.

So my questions are:
What laptop models are good for my goal(as cheap as possible).

What general laptop hardware is good for(read: will actually work with) BF2.

Is there anything I should stay away from, or any laptop components that don't work well with BF2 that I should also avoid?

Oh and one final note for reasons that are unique to me, laptops that have Intel 2200 wireless b/g are good for some of my other uses.

I use an Acer 3022wlmi laptop. Only cost 595GBP inc VAT, has Radeon X600 graphics, I increased the RAM to 2GB as BF2 loves RAM and BF2 runs fine on Medium video settings. You cannot get this model anymore but any laptop with at least ATI X600 or GeForce Go6600 graphics and 1GB of RAM will be fine. They all now have integrated wireless LAN at that level. That doesn't seem to bad of a price, I was expecting more, but this gives me a bit of hope. I'm thinking that I can save a bit now by getting a laptop that I can add RAM to and then add more when funds allow. And I think I can save a bit if I get a fast but small HD, I've got a 200gb external for most stuff(like movies and music).

As for being in the UK thats a no go for me I'm on the Canada-USA border, so my options are limited to those two, until I get to europe next year that is, but thanks anyway:) .

But if anyone could mention some paticular model of laptop and possibly a link to it that would be a great help(and remember I'm on a budget :) ).

well first (since its easier to answer) your second question:
almost EVERY gpu is supported, its crazy. the only thing is you HAVE to get the laptop with the gpu in it. there is no upgrading. but i mean, x1800, 7900gt, 7800gtx, everything basically. now of course not EVERYTHING but there is a very good selection, depending on where you buy it. i mean, they even have friggin SLi laptops. gosh!.

as for a good laptop, I would get it with at least a gig of ram, a pentium m, or mobile athlon at at least like 1.7ghz. my laptop has a 3ghz pentium 4, which works very good, but it heats up like a mothers, wastes a lot of battery and is huge. go with small and mobility.
as for graphics, find something good...

dell makes very good laptops as long as you get it with a good GPU, and I mean they do have good laptops.

hp laptops IMO arent as good but they still perform pretty good. the ones on the website arent really for gaming, but if you buy an HP or a laptop from a place like Frys they can do upgrades etc.

ABS.com is alright (for intense gaming laptops)
and cyberpowerpc.com
and ibuypower.com have very very good laptops deals in my opinion. if u need more clarificatrion just ask im sort of typing this in a rush at school i hate essays tbf2 is much better.

I've got a few questions regarding video cards now , will a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 PCI-E 128MB run bf2?*

And how well do the following (mobile) cards stack up against each other

ATI x600(128), ATI x700(128), Geforce Go 6200(128)*, Geforce Go6600(128), (and any others you can think of just to compare)

I'd assume that the x700 and the 6600 are the best out of that list, but I would not pick any of them. If you need a laptop, you should get the ASUS A6Ja Q0028. It has 1.83ghz core duo, Radeon X1600, 1GB ram, and 100GB harddrive. You should upgrade the RAM though, but other than that it should play BF2 well.

Pentium M 725 "Dothan" pm'd @ 2.13ghz
1GB DDR2 PC4200 533MHz (on one stick upgradable to 2gb later)
40gb HD @ 5400rpm (because again I'm on a budget and can replace it later, and I have a 200gb external)
DVD-RW drive
Video Card (I don't know yet thats why I'm asking)

That looks good, try seeing if you can find one with those specs and either an x600 or x700, you would probably be able to run BF2 on low-med on that. :)

I've been looking at laptops with similar stats again, and now I kind of wanted to get the forums opinion on the performance of the following processors, what kind of performance difference are we looking at, and how much ground does being 64 bit make up compared to the 32 bit processors.

I would choose the Uniwill N259EN Portable Intel Mobile M, or the mid range model if you need to save funds. That 256md graphcis card will help with BF2 a LOT.

That one looks pretty good, but you REALLY need to post what amount of ram is in them, not just the type and max.

I think I just forgot to say having said earlier in the thread:) I planed on getting 1gb of ram now and then going up to 2 later(if possible) once I had a little more availible $.

That looks quite nice actually.The ones I've been looking at were configured at www.unitedmicro.com.

And Just so you know the laptops with Intel processors that I'm refering to would come to me with processors that run at 1.6ghz, at which point I would pinmod(overclock) them to 2.13ghz. This would deffinately void most warrenties, though I plan on assembling the laptop myself and I will still get a 1 year warrenty on the components regardless of what I do with them, but this is not a recomended thing to do if your not that familiar with assembling computers.

Edit: I took a look at that computer at Dell and noticed that it came with Windows XP Media Centre Edition. I beleave that Media centre edition will not allow you to log on to a network domain, this may not be a problem because it still allows you to access resources on the network; however at least on my campus to have to log onto the University domain to to _anything_, if you don't believe that it will be a problem don't worry, if you think it might(and arn't interested in the laptop remote) you can get the XP home editoin for the same price from Dell.
