X-Fi sound card, digital audio out + microphone?

From what I've read on the X-Fi, it uses the same port on the back of the card to handle digital out and mic in. Of course there is the breakout box if you get the higher end ones (Amazon has a deal on the Platinum for $130 right now).

So, if you want to plug your sound card into a 5.1 set of speakers using the digital connection, you can't have a mic plugged in the back at the same time. (I don't want to have the mic plugged into the breakout-box!)

How have other people dealt with this? Is this information correct?

Well.... I have an X-fi and 5.1 analog speakers but no mic. I believe that you can plug your mic into any remaining jack and the soundcard will automatically pick it up. Don't ask me where I read this, all I can say is it was definitly something official from creative although I was looking for something else entirely diffeent. If that doesn't work, it may be possible to keep your onboard sound enabled and use that for your microphone input only while keeping all the other **** disabled. I've never done it but it sounds plausible.

Doing some searches on the this forum yields one person asking about running 2 sound cards (onboard + X-Fi) and BF2 VOIP just doesn't recognize the mic of the second soundcard. He reported it worked with TS and all other windows apps, just not BF2. But, no responses or replies.
