9800se@9800 better than 6600gt ?!?

My fine ATI 9800se@9800 has passed on .... so it was time to get a little upgrade, I got a Gainward AGP 6600GT 128MB and.... could not believe my eyes

Performance in BF2 has dropped drastically, say from modest 30-40 fps (and lower in big gunfights, arty, etc) to almost unpalyable 10-15-20 fps!

After first shock I OC-ed it and still nothing. Amaysing that there is almost no differance between 1024x768@85Hz at med settings and 800x600 at low settings. I have read tons of pages regarding optimising this and that and still at the end come to same conclusion, my old card was better!

I mean, how is that possible??? I even digged out this from tom's harware: "the Radeon 9800 Pro can't keep up with the 6600 GT AGP in most areas"

I just don't know what to do now, and even it sounds ridicilous I am thinking of getting 1GB DDR.... help!

lmao, 6600GT has about the same performance as the 9800pro...

I have played with 6600 nonGT 128MB with all low setting and it was ok.
Using all medim or all high settings is a very bad idea, since every parameter effects your performance in a different way... read this http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html and buy the extra RAM it worth it!

If you say 1Gb extra ram will help, ... well, I was kinda thinking of getting it... in the future...

Yep they are about the same cards. Its possible the drivers were installed wrong, because you shouldnt be seening a drastic performance drop etc.... but going from 9800pro ---> 6600GT is not an upgrade, except for shader 3.0 support they are equal performance wise.

could be twsmit, I haven't even uninstaled ATI dirvers properly but will do it, I have to. It is just that I havent expected this catastropy! And after it happened I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled 3 different nforce dirvers... I guess it's time for driver uninstaller pro or what's its name...

I didnt say its better, just said they are about the same. It's a side step with some new technologies like 3.0 shaders, but thats about it. The 6600GT is probably the better card but i'm not sure by that much.

Jimmy's link is probably on the right track, many of the games show a 1-10% increase with a few showing 35%+.

So maybe my original post was a little off, but I was going off of prior knowledge/memory from a few years back. I could probably dig up some benchies where they are the same, but it doesnt really matter.

Bottomline he should be getting equal performance to what he had before, he isnt, therefore something is screwed up.

Yea seems like older games take more of a liking to the 9800, but newer games will boost the 6600GT performance.

Yes, qute true. Although I did not point out that I had to reset the BIOS after 9800se died. Machine just did not react to anything even when I disconected everything from the motherboard (except power cables lol). As I am not that experienced with playing with hardware I don't know if reseting bios could have made any damage that I can not see now. It is obvious (I honestly hope so) that something is wrong with the software, and since 9800 worked fine, it just must be the driver issue as nothing else changed. But after trying 3 different drivers for 6600gt still no progress, still working on it...
