Well, I came here in March knowing nothing about building a PC. I knew a sheit load about PC's, but I couldn't build one. After getting some help, I got forwarded to newegg.com and we given a few tips. Thanks, community.

Now I will actualy be buying the computer (in less than a month). It is important I know the final cost of the computer, so I have built a wish list on newegg.com with all the parts I am planning to get. The price is pretty good, 1.4k, and the specs are loads better than my crappy Dell Latitude D505 laptop.

Anyway, I am back here at the BF2 community for help again. Could you look over the list and help me with these things:

-Cost; if you know a part that is slightly cheaper than another and performs at the same level, let me know

-Compatability; Does everything work, or will there be compatability errors.

-Power; I'm trying to get as much power as I can for under 1.5k USD.

-Value; I don't want to skimp out on this. I most likely will NOT overclock, and if I do, it will be very slightly. I want this computer to last a LONG time, becuase I dont have money to waste. Please check to make sure the parts I am getting are worth their price tag.

But, while searching for these, please keep in mind I dont want to change the computer TOO much. If you have a Cost, Power or Value suggestion, unless it would make a consderable difference, it would be best to leave the computer the same. The main thing I am trying to do now is make sure I dont end up with 15 computer parts that dont work with each other, or that I don't get ripped off.

Oh, and I want to run BF2 full specs :-)

Just wondering but can't you just use the Windows you have on your computers now (if its XP pro) and install it on the new computer and use that money you were going to purchase a new XP pro with towards getting maybe a 7800GT or 7900GT.

I think it looks good. Im not too sure if they 7600 can play BF2 maxed out but I would get a second opinion. It looks like you did your homework though.

Edit* I wouldnt even bother with XP Pro, its got a few more options but I dont think most people use them enough to justify the money spent.

THanks guys, and the windows I have is supposedly Dell Only, but I cant test it out, and if it doesnt work, ill buy XP.

The only reason i see getting Pro over Home is the backup feature, but that is ****ty anyway....could you recomend any free backup software, and can anyone point out the difference between pro and home (other than the backup utility)?

Also, for the graphics card, I heard it can play BF2 quite fine, as well as many other games. With the money I could save from going XP-free, could you recomend an alternative to my graphics card?

Im using the windows version that came with my dell I bought a while back and its fine. One time it gave me a CD key problem and i gave MS a ring and it was fine.

If you decide to stick with the windows version you have now you could buy something like a 7900GT/x1800xt or better.

Your Dell only copy will not work, get your own standalone OEM copy of Windows.... anyways here are my critiques....


Everything looks great except the motherboard, CPU, ram, DVD drive and OS, also video card. (this isnt a joke, i think you can improve on all fronts)

-Unless your into pirating a burning program, get one with bundled software like Nero. Bundled DVD/RW are a few dollars more than the naked drives.

-That motherboard is excellent, but its an overclocking motherboard, dont get it. Save yourself and pick up a regular NF4/Ultra/SLI board that is cheaper, like Asus. I would personally go with the $100ish Asus SLI board.

-That was a nice CPU a year ago, now adays thats alot of money for a single core. Go all the way and get a dual core, or drop down to a 3200+ and save yourself a bundle of money. Put that money into good use with a video upgrade.

-Upgrade the video to a x1800XT 512MB or a 7900GT. If your a gamer a 7600GT is nice, but you should really try and maximize the video card, frankly any 3ghz+ CPU will be mroe than enough for everyday stuff, gaming needs a good video card, and right now you have a mid range one picked out.

-The ram is fine ram, but its expensive if your not OCing. You can pick up something like this and save money.

-Last pick up XP Home for $90, and put the savings elsewhere



EDIT:

Last thing, that Monitor is Analog and from an off brand. That is a huge risk to take buying that, and you really want a monitor with a DVI port, analog offers inferior visual quality. Get yourself something nice and reputable.

-I need to keep the graphics card under 200, i dont have the money for one higher. The models you suggested are all 280 dollars and higher. If you can find one under 200 that is a significant improvement, let me know.
-I havent changed the processor yet, becuase i notced the 3700 has a 1M instead of 512k L2 Cache. Will it make a big performance difference? EDIT: I will go with the cheaper 3200 and overclock to 2.6ghz.
-Edit: I forgot about the screen. What is the best in-expensive 17 inch lcd computer screen??

Once you look over this ^^ and help me with teh last parts, I will ediit my first post with all the changes.

I agree get a 3200+ and upgrade your video card.

Save yourself $30 and get the ram twsmit suggested.

take all the money you saved and invest in the video card. Say you go with the RAM that is $30 cheaper, you now have +$30 to use to buy a video card.

Everything looks good, I have two 19" ag neovo monitors and I love them, the build quality was (suprisingly) outsanding, they got dvi, colors are nice and crisp, hardly any bleeding, really good. That said, the monitor wreck posted is completely badass and you should definately buy it. Other than that, have fun with your new rig.

Basically he went with the suggestions I made and Wreck's 19" screen. We were unable to price in a better video card, but the 7600GT should do him well, and he can go SLI if he has to down the road.
