Bought A New Athlon 64 Lately?

The reason I ask if anyone has brought a RETAIL athlon 64 is I have one arriving this week and i forgot to order some thermal compound for the heatsink/cpu interface.

Do I need it?
Ok. You want to reply "of couse you do you muppet". But hold on.
I was informed by someone who posts on this site and is usually right that the heatsink comes with a thin machine applied layer of thermal compound/paste already applied.A plastic cover protects it in shipping.

Can anyone throw anymore light on this for me?
Second question: If this is true is it any good?(If AMD do ship a retail CPU with thermal compound I can't see them using an inferior mixturte).

The stock heatsink comes with thermal paste on it already.

the stock heatsink comes with it, and if you buy an aftermarket cooler (basically, one that isnt stock) it depends. some models come with the thin layer, and some dont but they DO come with a pack of it. so really.... you will have thermal paste dont worry.

It arrived today...
Along with a new motherboad which came complete with all nice new cables etc. I wanted to ask that too but thought it one noob question to far.
Oh, the heatsink and cpu.It came with a thin layer of thermal paste pre applied as quoted.
If you have never brought this sort of gear before you are never quite sure what ends up in the box.Buying online is the easy and cheapest way to upgarde but the information on specs and contents can be a bit vauge with some of the sites.
