ram issues

I ordered 2 512 slots of ram and now all 4 slots are filled and each slot holds 512 mb ram.

I got asus p5gpl motherboard and the ram is ddr 512 mb pc3200 kingston.

the problem is when i tuirned on pc it says


"Due to chip limitation, this motherboard can only support maximum 2 gb and 4 ranks of memory. Please refer to user manual for detail information.

Now after that windows would boot up and stuff but windows kept rebooting,locking up, etc. I went to start any video game and it also would reboot. I finally removed the 2 new 512 mb ram cards i bought and now have no problem with windows anymore. but i want to get the 1 gb working that i bought for $82 + i need at least 1.5 gb to run bf2 on all high with my 7900 otherwise it stutters cause of ram!

Sounds strange. I'd make sure that the BIOS is the latest version, and I'd juggle the order of the memory chips around to see if that fixed the problem.

a stupied thing is that most motherboards have 4 slots 2 DDr and 2 DDR2 so make sure its not in the wrong slots.

Due to chip limitation, this motherboard can only support maximum 2 gb and 4 ranks of memory. Please refer to user manual for detail information.

Rank has to do with how the memory chips on your memory module are organised. A memory module is ussually either single rank or dual rank.
Your motherboard only supports 4 ranks, so I guess each of your module should be of single rank.
I believe single rank memory modules have all the memory chips/ic's on one side of the module (not really sure about this).

your 4 512MB ram sticks are all double sided (have chips on both sides) meaning that when all 4 sticks are in you are trying to run "8 ranks" when only "4 ranks" are supported

search google for possible workarounds, although that doesnt sound like something that can be worked around


if there is no workarounds, which there probably isnt, the solution is:
a) sell your current ram and buy 2 1GB sticks
b) try to get 4 single sided 512MB sticks (might be rare)

Can you ask to return ram just because it doesn't work for your type of motherboard from newegg??? if not i will just sell it on ebay.

Yeah you can, they may hit you with a restocking fee though.

This is one reason I suggest 2 x 1Gb sticks over 4 x 512.
