Ok so ive just ordered a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS i was just wondering what steps i will need to take before installing this soundcard ie removing old sound drivers. thanks hope to get some replies.

If you are using onboard sound right now you will need to disable it (depending on your motherboard) in BIOS. I would then check to see that it is disabled in Device Manager, then proceed with the install. If you then have problems with the X-Fi install the first thing I would do is get rid of the onboard sound drivers. -

Do you have some kind of high end sound system ? otherways i cant see the point of getting this .... For only gaming X-FI Extrememusic is as good as fatality.Comment

you first uninstall the old sound drivers. then go into your BIOS and disable onboard sound. then (this step can be done first or now). turn off the computer and stick in the x-fi, boot up, and install the drivers and your good.Comment

OK thanks for all your help so the correct way would be to remove old sound drivers, then disable onboard sound in the bios and the fire away and install the sound card.
One more thing would i be better using the cd that comes with it or to download the latest software as i have heard there has been issues with this sound card in the past.Comment

Yes, BF2 sounds alot better if you have an X-Fi, and the directional sound is so good its like having a UAV over your head all of the time.

That is a an understatement. The difference in quality between onboard and dedicated sound is huge. Buying a soundcard is the best $50 (other maybe than memory) that you can spend to upgrade your machine. I pulled my Audigy 4 recently to put temporarily in my HTPC and I was stunned at how poor the sound was on my gaming rig with the onboard sound. Sounds in a game are all discreet events....in BF2 there can be lots and lots of simultaneous sound events going on at the same time...chopper overhead, artillery, gunfire, voices. A dedicated card will render more of these clearly, with more definition, fullness, and spatiality; the X-Fi Fatality can render a very large number of simultaneous events, which makes it great for BF2.
Lastly, offloading the sound to a dedicated card means less work for the remainder of your system which can translate for some folks, depending on their hardware, on a few extra fps.
Yeah, some might consider the $250 Fatal1ty to be overkill, then again those same folks might be running $1k SLI pairs so to each his own.Comment
