would a AMD athlon 64 3000+ bottleneck a 7900GT?

It will a little. The 3000+ is a great CPU for the 7900GT, but lets put it this way, you will see a small performance boost if you had a faster CPU.
The bottleneck is not enough IMO to justify not getting the card though. If you want you can always OC the CPU. :) -

ive already bought the 7900 and i am planning on buying a better cpu when ive got the money. how far do you think i would have to overclock the cpu to get rid of the bottleneck and would i be able to do it on stock cooling?

you could probably get it stable at 2.2 depending on the mobo, maybe higher.
in bf2, its probably not a bottleneck, in other games probably is. not sure.Comment

btw the cpu is socket 754, does that make any difference? i think i will overclock it as i need money to buy 2 gig of decent ram before i think about a new processor.
my mobo is a Asrock K8SLI-eSATA2 and you can get an upgrade board to make it 939 so thats probably what i will do when i get a new processorComment

If its a venice core you should be able to reach 2.6ghz fairly easily. The increased memory bandwith should also help you out too since dual channel isnt supported in socket 754.Comment

a socket 754 3000+ is 2ghz at stock speed. 2.2-2.4ghz is very likely. Unless you have one of the newer venice s754 chips, its probably a clawhammer or newcastle. While still good for a minor OC, your probably not going to be able to reach 2.5ghz+ without extra cooling.
I would aim at 2.2ghz and be happy with that on stock cooling.Comment
