I don't know squat about computers. Just ask Lil_Jimmy_Norton, heh. I'm currently having a hell of a time doing a fresh Windows install. It's never been this problematic for me before. Grrrr!

Make sure you run prime95 or something similar for a few hours every time you set your clock higher. A system can look stable, but if it's too close to the edge your memory may drop a bit once in a while. If that happens when a system file gets changed (like the registry), your installation will slowly but surely grind to a halt and you will have a hell of a time figuring out what went wrong.

Please don't rush into it.

Well I installed the Opteron 165 and so far I've seen quite a bit of a peformance boost. It's pretty cool being able to alt+tab out of a game and watch a movie, then go back in without any problems.

I see you've discovered the glory of dual core. Trust there is no turning back now.

Some of the ram dividers on the DFI are finicky so don't worry too much about it. Try to keep your ram at or below 200mhz until you get your processors max overclock.

You won't need any less than a LDT multi of 3X for that kind of overclock. For an overclock of 2.9Ghz you'll need an HTT speed of 322mhz which is kinda pushing the limits of the board imo. This is the reason I went with the Opty 170, some boards don't like very high HTT speeds.

Did you happen to note the stepping? What voltage are you using on the processor?

Not so much a boost, but it has the ability to run multple programs without any slowdown.

Actually I have seen quite a boost. Especially in 3DMARK programs, but in overall system peformance too. Windows is EXTREMELY snappy. Whenever I shut down,it happens almost instantaniously conpared to single core.

No, like I said I didn't get a chance to look at the stepping, I forgot. But I'll be putting my videocards on water soon which means I'll be leaktesting and can check during that time. That's in about two weeks or so.

I've got a good install now. The problem was I followed some advice to use the topmost sata ports to avoid having to use a floppy drive. But this created problems with the boot.ini file for some reason. After using the floppy, all has been good.

I'm currently drinking and watchinga movie, so not much more testing tonight. I'd install some games while watching the movie but unfortunately one of my drives appears to have died (dvd drives). I've got three discs of American Dad. After disc one I'll try some things to fix the dvd, but for the most part, you can assume I won't be benchmarking until tomorrow.

As far as the 165/170 debate... I'm not regretting getting the 165, but the htt problem certinally was a surprise to me. I figured it was just 200mhz and having to deal with the math of a 9x multi. I really didn't think there was any difference other htan that worth spending an extra $70 on. But I've read of people getting 165's into or near the 3ghz range, so I'm not fretting yet.

BTW, did some testing tonight and have seen an EXTREME peformance boost in almost every game. I'm not 100% happy,but I think I can say I'm 100% happy from before getting this processor. =)

glad to hear you got it all running sweet/smoth/fast fps ect.

lol you will never be 100% happy m8,but if you in the 90+ range all is well.

you spent alot of time and effort in youre rig,its time for you to sit back and enjoy youre gaming now.

939 mobo and 3500 amd 64 or i may get the 3800x2 if i wait a few more weeks.
