Yeah. Put the stock cooler back on. Sounds like you've mounted it incorrectly.

Yeah, sounds like it incorectly seated. Take it of, clean it, reapply thermal paste and reseat it. If that doesn't work just put the stock one back on.

I agree. If there is not full contact between the the chip and sink on the cooler your temperatures are going to be on the high side.

high side is an understatement

if heatsink is not touching the cpu it will take n o time at all to cook the cpu

take it out reapply after clean

leave side on to make sure fan is actually running dont trust the sensor readings

the fans running fine

i repeated the installation agian

1.took cooler off
2.cleaned core and memory of thermal grease
3.re-fitted cooler still with spare pre applied thermal grease

seems to getting warmer now its 46 degrees idle

im thiking re-apply the old heatsink however theres not much thermal grease left on the old heatsink and memory on the stock cooler and i have none spare would this be a good move?

plus those memory pads goona be a bitch to take off

My BFG 7800GT idles at exactly 46C when the systems been on awhile, that seems normal... you still getting high temps at load? The first thing I would do is get a tube of Arctic silver 5 or any good grease, re-using the old stuff isn't too good. Really make sure that the grease is evenly spread across the core, and the cooler isn't sitting crooked or anything. Sometimes you can kinda tell if the core wasn't making full contact by looking at the grease around the contact area when you take it off.

There is a possibility that the cooler is not making good contact with the GPU due to bad fit of the cooler to your particular card. There needs to be a certain amount of pressure between the two to ensure good contact. If you don't have the sense that you are fastening the foot of the cooler down with pressure against the GPU you might have a misfit, which is not at all uncommon for aftermarket coolers. After all, they are designed to work with a wide range of different cards and chips. The NV5 should work fine with the 7800GT as that version was designed for that card, but there has to be a problem with contact if you are not getting good temps. The NV5 is an excellent cooler and you should be seeing load temps substantially lower than what you have. I know it is a dumbe question but you are sure the fan is running, correct?

Sometimes you can kluge the card or mounting hardware to fix this, sometimes you can't. That a matter for your judgement if you ascertain that this is the problem.

My GPU idles at 43 c. so I don't think your idle numbers are cause for alarm, FWIW.

Anyone have a nice picture of what is the right amount of thermal paste? I put my stock HSF back on my 7800gt so i can send it in for a step-up, but it's getting worse temps than it was before I put on Zalman. Of course, ambient temp--outside my house, at least-- has changed (60 degree weather in winter and 80-90 now), but it is idling 4-6 degrees higher than before. And it seems to get higher under load as well.

Anywho, just a picture with how much thermal paste to use would be nice :)
