Temerature Question

Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 SE Turbocache
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2Ghz
1G RAM

I am having the same problem as other people are with the game crashing to the desktop while playing the game. My game doesn't always crash within 15-20 minutes of playing. When i play Stirke at Karkland, it normally crashes aound an hour or not at all. Wake Island does the same thing, but just yesterday it crash when i started flying (which makes me believe it might be a RAM issue). The weird thing is when i play Gulf at Oman it ALWAYS crashes within 5 to 10 minutes. Is this beacuse Oman is a more complicated map and uses more memory?

My questions are:

1. When i play BF2 i radomly check the temperature of my graphics card to see if this is causing the crashes. It normally is in the high 80's C and yet it is only in the yellow section of the meter. Is this too hot? Do i need to get a better fan?

2. I have also heard something about over and underclocking. Now i am not a computer guy and not sure what this does. I read somewhere not to overclock turbocache becuse it will get to hot. But what about underclocking? Will underclocking solve the crashing problem? What do i do to underclok? I don't see a place to underclock on the GeForce Display.

80 degrees celcius is hot as hell, you could fry an egg on that puppy.

look into after-market coolers like the ones from Arctic.

Anything much over 80C your hardware will begin to suffer heat damage and eventually failure. Heck my 3 gig CPU is only good up to 89 C but I have a thermaltake series 7 cooler on it backed by 4 case Vantec tornadoes keeping everything about 40C or less. Finally there is a window mounted air conditioner capable of bringing the rig down to about 26C.

As far as your maps like Oman, try to look around for servers that are robust and fast.

also make sure you vaccume out the case including mobo (being carefull of course) dust in the proc area really increases the temp...

also i agree with ^ my friend was having same problem and his thermal paste on proc had dried out....

if you dont have a proc cooler def get one (30-60$) and make sure you add new thermal paste artic silver as stated ^

As mentioned, clean out the card, check for dust / etc... and not just on the surface, take off the fan and clean under it.

Under-clocking can reduce temps, but you'll also notice a performance drop in-game. Lowering video settings in-game will also reduce the amount of stress put on the card.

Just a basic suggestion, I did this with my 9800 pro, when BF2 was cooking it - take off the side of your case and have a small fan blowing on the cpu / vid card, you'd be surprised how something as simple as that will drop heat.

i have a friend who went to the machine shop at college and cut his own die outa solid copper mounted it to his proc and teh proceeded to tear apart his refridgerator and hooked the coils and refrigerant up to the die for max cooling!

friggin crazy bastard who got an A in thermodynamics and machine shop....never went to class and played on the lacross team

I had the 6600GT and that would always get into the 80's when playing games, so I would guess that it is within its limits (like the temp reading said).

I never experienced any heat related crashing with the GT so I didnt get into aftermarket coolers. But I do know that you can't get an Arctic cooler for the AGP 6xxx's series, as the GPU is set at a 45 degree angle.

Yeah that's within the acceptable range. Not ideal, but acceptable.

my amd 3200 idles round 34-38

pentiums normally run higher so id say your just above average

maybe 40-50 would be the norm...someone correct me on this

He's talking about graphics cards, not CPUs.

Ideal would be 45ish idle and 65ish load, on air.
