Your HD did not misplace 52 gigs. Your hard drive can not utilize 52 gigs due to your file system (NTFS or FAT32?) which you chose at format. It does seem a lil high. I currently have two 250gig WD in raid 0. I am unable to use 33 gigs due to file system structure and root directory listing (NTFS). If you really want to verify your HDD capacity, defrag/scandisk that bad boy and back up and do a fresh install then see if you lost/gained any storage capacity. GOOD LUCK!
