since im buyin 2 gigs can i add the 512 mb thats already in my computer to make it 2.5 gigs?..the 512 in my comp now is a different brand than the gigs im getting so is it possible?

Which motherboard and CPU is it? Short answer is... NO. Longer answer is yes you physically can but 9 out of 10 times you dont want to do what your proposing.

I would not do it if I was using a AMD 939 system, but Intel? Yes.

i have amd athlon 64 and i own a gateway emachine..so i should just stick with 2 gigs of the same kind and toss the 512 out?

Yes, though I wouldn't toss the other ram, you never know when you might need it.
