Well i dont think parts will get damage by insufficient power, is the other way around, and over voltage can cause damage, but not sufficient power will just cause reliability problems, most likely to cause reboots if any.

they will. My old system (AMD athlon 1800+, 640mb of RAM and 5200 Ultra) fried because I was trying to use a 200watt PSU. I could tell my system was slowing down, because in games when I used to have high fps (i.e. BF42), the FPS would slowly drop over time, because my video card wasn't getting the power it was needing, and was kiling itself with time.

Think of it like oil in your car engine. Without enough, the motor isn't properly lubricated and will result in damage with time. It will run fine for a while, but after a while, you will see your not quite getting the horsepower you are used to, engine parts may wear out faster than normal, and eventually, the motor will quit on you. This can happen to your computer parts not getting the power it needs to run properly.

Think of it like oil in your car engine.

I see it more as petrol, give it less and it just runs less fast, but you don't damage it, give it too much and you may blow it up.

I can't believe giving less power to a silicon chip wil damage it. There may be other scenarios. Maybe the fans stopped working properly because they did not get enough power or the PSU start behaving erratic under the heavy load and may produce some spikes. Don't know PSU that well though.

Out of curiosity, as you've experienced this first hand, what exactly got fried?

from what happened to me, the system slowly declocked itself. The system would run, but over a long period of time, everything would slow down. Because the PSU can't give enough power to all the parts, your PSU has to work overtime. With my video card, the fan couldn't run at full speed, because it was sharing power with the GPU, and the GPU was hogging a vast majority of it, so the fan fan wouldn't spin at it's full speed. My CPU was rated at 1.53Ghz, but now it's at 1.46Ghz. When I take the video card out, and use the onboard graphics, the CPU fan and the exhaust fans spin faster, and the CD drive doesn't make a screeching sound trying to get the CD to spin. From what I see, what will eventually happen, is that the PSU will eventually short itself out, and take the rest of the system with it.

this man speak's the truth ive seen the same thing happen so many times,it usaly resorts to the 3v on the psu burning the mobo,for the reason the powersupply is being pushed to the limit,i.e 250watt psu is not running at 250watt 100% of the time,

i made a thread ages ago stating a 500watt psu and 30amp on 12v rail needed for fast gfx card ect,many didnt belive but most of them now have 500+psu.

so for the op take that stupid thing called a 250w psu out of youre rig before you take the rest of youre system down.

if the powersupply fails the mobo will sort-out and chances are you prosser will go with it(from expericence) and some cases the card with it.

a freind of mine had a brand new bgf 5700 cost 150 uk at the time,he had a 250 powersupply and after 2 weeks it blew due to stress and took the card with it.

example.
i have a geforce 6600gt and on the box it clearly states 350watt minimum!!!
minimum = a pc with 1 hd and 1 dvd/cd-rom

so simply math will tell you if you have extra fans add-on cards extra dvd drives /hd then more power is needed.

well after a quick google it says youre card needs 350w minimum.
so that why youre gfx is lagin.

take a tip from me turn of pc take out psu and go get a new one or you will find yourself buying a whole new system.

get 500+watts and check the amprage on the 12v rail dont go lower than 20 if you can.

p.s plz take this seriously if you value youre pc.

I don't what thread it was, but Drunken Pirate told this kid to change his AGP aperture to 256. And the Kid replied saying that fixed it and his lag was gone. Well, I changed mine to see what would happen and well, My Effin lag is gone! Not to mention after downgrading from roadrunner to DSL. So yea, I'll still be getting that 470watt PSU when I can afford it. But yea, the lag is AFK now and I'm good to go. I think as long as I keep my settings at all medium I won't be doing any damage to anything. Well, thats that. Thanks for the replizzies though.
