^^ Yup x2 3800+ and a 7600GT, both great bang for the buck. Dont worry about a sound card now, best for upgrading later, and on-board sounds arent that bad.

Do not buy middle end ati cards such as the x800, they are becoming outdated, save for the 7900gt, best bang for your buck card on the market, also get a leadtek they work a treat and have no probs as my brother has one in his comp

I would argue that the 7600GT is a better buy than the 7900GT. Its (australian) $200 cheaper, and OC;s very well, can almost reach 7900GT speeds.

Yeah but it will never offer the same performance as a 7900GT. Honestly who cares if the card has similar clock speed, that doesnt translate into FPS.

Sorry dont intend to be overly critical, but its just a fact I had to point out. Way too many people say "X OC's this much" when in reality it doesnt mean a thing, you cant make a mid range card out perform a high end by anymeans using overclocking.

True.. the 256bit instead of the 128.. and the 512MB RAM vs the 256.. etc.. but for the money.. its not a bad buy. thats all i was tring to say.. :)

If the pipeline difference is small, you definitely can. A 7600 GT shouldn't give the same results as a 7900. Overclocking will give a large noticable boost in performance though.

I say u go to best buy and get a compaq there with a gig of ram and it may come with a fre 17 in monitor and a printer free, and then go get a vid card put in. thats wat i did.
i got a amd athlon 3500+ 1 gig of ram and a 200 gb hard drive and a tv tuner card and a visiontek 1300 512mb card so ya
It came to like 1300

True, if they are the same technology generation/family then yes. But all too often lately i have been reading people comparing ATi vs Nvidia on clock speed, or cards with differing amounts of pipes or memory interface size and going off just the raw clockspeed. Makes me sick.

I always go with which ever video card has the most "x"'s in it's name. I'm waiting on a Radexon Xxx000xxX xtx PE eXxXhibition model before my next upgrade.

Or an nVidia BFGee,That'sExXXxpensive xtothexth Power OC.

YEah, You should get dual core though

I got mine a month ago and im very satisified with the speed of the 3700+
It wouldn't be a bad decision to get one since honestly dual core games are not around the corner as close as you think.
Yes. Call of duty 2 and ut2007 will but it will barely make a difference.

If you have a 1200 budget

And are going to the single core
Then i would get a 7900gt
Its only 315 dollars about
If you get dual core
then get the 4400+x2 it has a 1mbx2 l2 cache
I dont think the 4200+x2 has a 1mbx2 l2 cache
And i know the 3800+x2 only has a 512 mb x2

that is the only bad side with the x2 3800+, but the yare great value for money, and a good entry into the dual cores.
