    memory question

I got my computer about 9 months ago its got an athlon 64 chip 3.4ghz with an asus k8n motherboard an geforce 6800 graphics card and a gig of ram. I recently ordered another gig will this make a big diff in loading time and the way the ingame runs even though i dont have a dual channel motherboard??

Do you have 2 512 sticks already and your adding a gig stick? What type and speed is it? and what did you order?

Well that should be fine. From my understanding 2 gig sticks will give you slightly better performance, but will it be enough to notice? I dont know. But the 2 gigs will help smooth things out and bring your load times down, enjoy!

Ive two Pcs one with 2gb one with 1gb. On 50% of maps they load just as quickly as each other (give or take a second) on some maps, maybe 20%the 1gb wins by a lot and the rest of the time my 2gb Pc wins by a lot. Admittadly they have differnt quality/resolution settings but Im not entirelly convinced that the 2gb load times are really that much better or if its a case of fooling yourself that the money spent on the upgrade was worthwhile.

I've done some real benchmarking and 1.5 gig or more will win over 1 gig by a significant margin, all other things being equal. It definitely makes a difference on larger maps. In addition to faster load times, it can eliminate choppiness from texture swapping.

If you're running AMD then your memory is DDR. Having matched pairs will allow the ram to run at the double rate. Otherwise it drops down to the single rate, which is about 30% slower. This is also true if you have more than two stick--you'll have to drop down to 2T even if you have two matched pairs. Your best strategy is two 1 gig sticks.

If you have an Athlon running 3.4 GHz you must be using phase cooling or something. With it overclocked that much I'm surprised BF2 runs at all. What chip is it?

He must mean its pr rating +3400, but if he doesnt I'm impressed and he probably doesnt need to turn his houses heating on.

For me though a big map like zatar wetlands (64) loads a lot faster on my 1gb Pc, but a map like (16) karkand is faster on my 2gb, so I feel that its not the map size, its the amount of textures that makes the difference. Still my own expectation was that my bigger faster higher speced PC should allways load faster even when taking different detail settings into account but thats not so.

I do feel the benefit in game all the time, my 1gb gets the odd stutter put not to an amount thats in any way significant.

I have the same system almost..
                  AMD 64 3200+
                  kn8 E delux
                  ge force 6800

I had 2 512 chips and after patch 1.22 started having a lot of video stutter, I upgraded to 2 1 gig chips and video stutter is gone. as far as load times, they are faster but that change is not worth the money.

Back on topic.. lol.what the 2gigs will do:

                            Decrease load times,
Stop large fluctuations in fps drop (by letting the CPU use ram instead of going to the HDD)

                            What it will not do:

Give you more fps.. it will stop the drops when a large firefight breaks out, but now make the game run faster. More RAM = Smoother, not faster.
