Ok so here it goes, I have the chance to sell my curent cpu(p4 3.0) and video card (x800xl) and mobo and be able to buy an athlon64 3000+ sli mobo and a 7600gt, im just wondering if there would be any performance loss or gains from this, I want to be able to upgrade to sli soon. thanks for the help.
Its more of a side step if anything. The x800XL and 7600GT are "roughly" similar in performance... anyone have any numbers?
I dont see your new AMD rig blowing the socks off your older rig. Will probably be faster, but not by much.

If the x800xl was to compete with the 6800GT a few years back so with the 7600GT being faster than the 6800GT the 7600GT would be a better choice. Doubt you will notice any differance at all to the 3000+ cpu might be a little slower.

Like twsmit said, it's a sidestep. When I upgrade, I always want to double performance. I would buy some new ram now since 2GB is almost standard. Upgrade gpu and/or cpu in 6 months+.
Supplies don't vanish just because production was stopped. A 7800 GT for $250 or less would be a better deal. Some places may be selling them off for newer stuff.
If you can find a good deal on a 7800GT, then get it, otherwise the 7600Gt is a vrey nice card, a good buy for the price. The 3000+ isnt a bad CPU, i use one and they overclock well enough. I have mine running at about the equivilent of a 3300+. I could go higher, but hey, i dont need it at the momemnt. So you would definately get improvement.
Thery are comparable. The A64 is of course faster, by a decent margin, but they are still comparable.
Yep, they are very comparable. In many benchmarks the Sempron is just as fast, only those that really make use of the cache show the differences. Much like a 3500+ venice vs a 3700+ san diego, the lack of cache on a sempron doesnt hurt it that much. Really they are fine chips, very nice little suckers, only the combined lack of cache and (this applies to all s754 semprons) lack of dual channel can weaken then in certain instances. Even then they are really nice for the money.
