1GB of RAM or a new video card?

Iv looked at past threads and saw RAM questions and video card questions, but i have a mix.

    Heres my specs:
    Geforce 6600GT 128MB
    AMD Athlon 64 Processor
    3000+
    1.81GHz
    1.00 GB of RAM

So im having the choppiness problems that other people have, and i can only either get a new videocard (i would go through for a geforce 7900GT because of ghost recon), or one more gig of ram.

Iv been trying to figure out my problem with BF2 for a looong time. Part of me thinks its my connection. I have good ping, but it does that thing where you walk around a building, the game freezes and you keep walking (more like sliding on ice) foreward past the building, then it warps you either out in the open or back behind the building a lot. I also get stuttering and freezing now and then, mainly if im being engaged/around a bunch of guys and firing but it happens now and then when im not being engaged.

But i get the stuttering and freezing while moving my mouse around on single player so thats why i ruled out my connection problems being on my side. (was probably always my choice of server that i was getting lag) The reason its not black and white is that i turned my graphics down to low just to test it and it did the same exact thing.

So, what would best fix this problem. Iv seen quite a few people say that 2GB of RAM helped their computers performance a boat-load, but a geforce 6600 128MB could be the problem..more specifically the 128MB.

1 gig of ram will help you more as to run without lag bf2 needs a min of 1.5 as itself takes around 1.1gig to run your 6600gt is not your problem unless you are trying to run your game in 1280x1024 with all setting at high and aa on

        get the 2GB, the 6600gt will run BF2 @ 1024x768 with medium/high.

Thats quite a tough choice but i dont think either ram or graphics will help. I've a 6600/1GB/xp2400 as my visitors pc and it runs just fine (at 1024x768). I wouldn't like you to pay up your money and be left with the same problem. Can you borrow some ram or a gfx card from a friend and see the difference it'll make before potentially spending money that you don't need to.

My 6600 is a 256mb model so maybe the texture memorys the problem for you, but try to test something out first.

He has the GT which is better than the standard 6600, I had one and had 2GB of ram and used to run medium @1280x1024, the 2nd GB really help with the stuttering.

if you got a new graphics card you will still have this same problem, you would probally have to get more ram for the better card to work at its full potential.

                  I have an AMD 64 3200+ and a Geforce 6800 agp
I had one gig and can play Aa off and 1280x1024 with background tasks turned off.
I upgraded to 2 gig and I can now play the highest settings and not turn anything off and no stutter.
With one gig the stutter you experience is not your connection it is your RAM. I dont know what the specs are going to be for Ghost Recon but if you need a new card I would think you would need more RAM first.

Wasnt suggesting that the GT isnt better than a 256/6600, but its the only real hardware spec difference that I can see between the OPs PC (struggling) and one of my pcs which has no problems. He's going to get a benefit from more ram, but is it really going to solve his stuttering slidey problem. I assume hes all drivered up to date but it could still be a software or driver conflict.
Realistically he should be able to run BF2 with what hes got as long as he isn't expecting to run ultra high settings and resolutions. I just feel other avenues should be explored before commiting cash to hardware that may or may not fix the problem.

                      thanks a lot guys.

Wont hurt too much to get a RAM, seeing as ill need it for crysis when it's out. I asked this on another forum too and so far only one person has said to get the video card (merlin cleared that up for me).

Im going to get a part time job so after i get the RAM and some more money ill upgrade the video card.

get the RAM! I have the same rig as you except I have 2 gigs of RAM and a GeForce 6100. As long as I keep my settings on LOW I don't lagg a single bit even in 64's. With the vid. card you have now you should at least be able to put it on medium.

Even if you get 2GB Ram, 128MB on the 6600GT is not enough to run BF2 at high.

I would get the 2 gigs of RAM. Even if you bought a new video card, the RAM would be holding you back, so you still couldn't enable everything. So, upgrade to 2 gigs, play without stuttering, then when you get more cash, upgrade to a decent video card!
