My computer had 512 MB before of PC2100 in 2x256MB. (Only have 2 memory slots) I just installed 1GB of PC2100 RAM, and it now says 768MB Memory, where it should be saying 1256MB RAM right? I have a 256MB and a 1GB in, so why is it saying 768 under system in control panel? Is 256 subtracted from the 1gb? Note this is not a dual channel board, so memory sizes can be different.

It would make sense if it was 512mb u put it. If u take the 256mb stick out, does it then show up as 1gb in control panel?
Only other thing off the top of my head is do u have shared graphics? -

Nope, Radeon X850 Pro 256MB vid card, and it is a 1gb chip it says so on it.Comment

So if you just have that stick in on its own, does it show up as 512mb or 768 still? Also check too see what the bios reports the stick size as at boot upComment

k so i took out the 256, and now the system says 512MB. Something is screwy. And it was the 256 i took out so dont post back saying did u take out the right one. Is the memory in the wrong slot? Theres only 2 slots so i guess its worth a try... and the bios just says total memory 512 no stick sizeComment

Noo u got it right :)
K i would most likely put it down to one of these.......
1) The stick is 512 mb not 1 gig (has been known to happen)
2) The stick is faulty
3) You have an old motherboard that doesnt support more than 768mb
Do you know what model motherboard you have? Either check the specs of it on the manufacturers website, or post what model it is and ill have a look for youComment

yah i have a compaq presario 6350 CA, but im pretty sure somewhere it said maximum memory size was 2048MB. Dunno the exact motherboard, but the model is Compaq Presario 6350CA. Maybe the stick has been mislabeled, ill take a look into it. Thanks.Comment

It could be a proper double sided 1gb stick, but the motherboard is only capable of reading 1 side hence 512mb
Try moving the 1gb stick into various slots (all other slots empty) until it registers as 1gb (if at all)Comment

What is the name brand of the RAM. If it is a well known brand you should contact them, and you should have a warranty on it. If its unmarked or "cheap" brand there is a chance its no good.Comment

k i used a system scanner and it does say maximum capacity is 2048MB, and it says the 2 chips inside are 256MB and 512MB. Im beginning to think I've been sent a 512MB chipComment

Just had a quick check on the specs which can be found here....
According to that it will take 1gb total, which i would take to mean it will take a maximum 512mb in each slot, which would explain why you are only seeing the stick as 512mb. I think your best bet would be check with Compaq to confirm this.Comment

weird cause a system scanner and the pc guy at the shop said i could do 2048mb, maybe the system only reads it as 512 but im using 1gb. ill try playin bf2 and see if it makes a big difference.Comment

Smacktard_uk is correct. Your PC specs are in the link he provided. There is no way around it. Each slot will only recognize 512mb of ram for a total of 1Gb. Doesnt matter what your pc guys says or even third party software. Your best bet is to trade that 1Gb dimm in for two 512mb sticks. Good luckOriginally posted by 22viPer22

Weird because I downloaded FreshDiagnose and it says the maximum memory(RAM) capacity is 2GB, 1GB per slot (i only have 2 slots) meh, i played bf2 and noticed a huge performance boost, so maybe my system is using the 1gb but only showing up as 512...

The difference between what the comps info states as max ram, and the specs from Compaq are because:
Compaq most likely uses a "partially disabled" or "locked" BIOS like my old eMachines did.
The motherboard itself was designed to accept 2x1024 as the manual probably states, but Compaq's modified/disabled BIOS is set to 2x512.
The only thing you can do is check in the BIOS...if you are even allowed to see enough of it that is.
Or if possible, find a specially made re-modified Compaq BIOS that opens up the lost/original settings.Comment
