all lian-li cases are superb for cooling & spacious, & i would suggest going dual core, as u will benefit from it more in the future.

In five months,the mobo, cpu and graphics card you have picked out will be obsolete. Socket am2 will be out, as well as conroe, plus nvidia's new core (g80) should be out.

this may be true, but new technology is coming out all the time making yesterday's technology obsolete the second you buy it. i think the point here is you have to take the plunge some time. you could always wait for something better (and more expenseive), but at some point you gotta pick something. the good thing about this is you can get older technology that works almost as good for a lot less cash. just because nvidia comes out with a superduper vid card with 2 mb ddr20 clocked at 4000 mhz and 100 pipelines doesn't mean that's what you need to have.

if i were to get a new cpu, it'd be dual core opteron.

What I'm saying is don't even bother trying to put together a list now, you'll just have to do it again in 5 months. The top of the line computer will be almost midrange in 5 months, so just wait till then.

Come back in five months. First off socket 939 and current P4's will be replaced.Secondly the 7800 series is obsolete, the current 7900GT is faster, and the X1900XT is currently the best card for the upper crest pricing in my opinion.

Come back 3 weeks before you plan on buying to get a better idea, because all I can tell you today is 5 months from now, you will need a CPU, mobo, ram and possibly graphics card compared to what is out now.

Thats true, but there are roadmaps, and both Intel and AMD are releasing new CPU's in JUNE. That is 100% confirmed and going to happen. With that comes newer ram ... DDR2-800, and also new motherboards. As for video cards, in 5 months the newest may not be out... (i expect september/october) but for sure the CPU/mobo/ram combo will be all new.

Then again, I don't think you want to run out and buy a new CPU-mobo-ram setup as soon as it hits the shelves for the simple reason that cutting-edge mobos have a history of being occasionally buggy on first release.

Secondly, the setup you listed can run any game out there maxed out, or almost maxed out, and at the least pretty dang well. One or two more games might come out this year that advance the the frontier on hardware requirements, but your machine will still run them more than respectably.

I think the stuff you spec'ed out will be good, and in 5 months it will be cheap too. I say go with 939 and then next year start thinking about upgrading. By then there will be games out that take advantage of the new hardware.

A good case for water cooling would be something like the coolermaster stacker, its huge! Yeah the new AMD AM2 will be out soon but wil it really be any faster? Core speeds are meant to be the same, process size is the same and its only one more pin (940). All the AM2 achieves is incorporating DDR2, and current DDR2 ram shows no noticeable performance increase over DDR1. BF2 performance is not based on the processor, it is more focused on GPU and ram performance.

The 7800 series is far from obsolete IMO, any of the 7800's will play BF2 on max settings. If I were you I would go for the 7800 GTX as it is cheaper.

Basically if you can afford the best hardware I would wait untill DirectX 10 comes out before spending large ammounts of money.

7800GTX is out of production, and prices are only getting higher. 7800GTX is $400+ and the 7900GT is $280-$330 and is faster.

Please explain your logic to me, I'm interested.

Hmmm...How much would a system like that cost?...the AM2, G80, the mobo that supports it?

Im going to make $2000 over the summer...and maybe Im going to sell my current PC for $600, so I only want to spend about $2000-$2500 on the new PC.

EVGA 7900GTX 512-P2-N575-AX: $600
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe 939: $215

Water Cooling system: ~$200
Cooler Master stacker: $250
Accessories: ~$200

Total: $2925

Hopefully prices will drop once the AM2 socket hits the markets.

BTW, does anyone know any red LED fans that are ACTUALLY red? All the ones I had have an orange type of glow, any recomendations, this is going to be a red + silver/black case design.

i would get an amd64 3500 bf2 don't need anything more and evern if you spend 700 on a cpu it wont make no diffrence in this game but what make's all the diffrence is the graphic's card if you get say an 6800 it will be around 55 fps just about maxed out say you get the top amd cpu like the 4800 or so it wount do nuthing that an amd 3200 /3500 can't if you spend a bit more on the card and get a 7900gt fps will be around 70+maxed out

Prices wont really drop on s939 when AM2 is out. They will be comparable in prices, and s939 will be phased out. On teh secondary market with used parts prices will be cheaper, but new stuff not so much.

As for that build, you want a dual core CPU, and honestly dont worry about this for a few more months.

Lastly your throwing alot of money at high "performance" priced parts, you get get ram that is just as good for $50 less. We are talking within 0-2% of the same speed, you can get a CPU for much less, $800 is an insane amount to spend, especially for a single core, and the raptor while nice is also alot of money. Another thing for around $50 less you can get regular SLI boards that are just as fast. I would also go with a single x1900XT.

Actually your a little wrong on that. S939 will be dropping, as according to AMDs roadmap it will become their budget solution, replacing S754.

Negative, both sockets are destined for the scrap yard, and in fact socket 754 will outlive 939 by a year.

According to AMD documentation, all socket 939 processors will stop shipping Q2 2007 with final orders occurring nearly half a year before end-date. AMD Roadmaps have socket 939 end of life (EOL) in Q4'06, while socket 754 is EOL Q4'07.

To clarify for the OP, im not saying come 2 months from now supply will dry up, but what I am saying is dont expect drastic price cutting. Socket 939 is older, but 95% as fast as AM2. We are not going to be seeing $150 X2's, or $500 FX chips flooding the market.
