bfg 7800 gs oc agp bad FPS

I got a BFG 7800 GS OC, my setup is as follows
Intel p4 2.8 Ghz (pulled out of a dell dimension 3000)
Asus socket 478 p4p800 SE motherboard
    BFG 7800 GS OC
two HD, one Samsung 80 Gb (pulled out of dell dimension 3000) and one Maxtor 300 Gb HD.
    Antec Truepower 480 W PSU
1.7 Gb of RAM (2X512 MB Kingston paored up, 1X512 kingston and 1x 256(pulled out of dell)

I play bf2 at 1024X768 and I tried to set everything on high with 4Xaa and the frame rate is like 15-30. I should be getting more then this. Any ideas why? I have all the latest drivers and updated BIOS for MOBO. Is it the processor holding me back?

im pretty sure you you should be getting alot better than this, i get that kind of frame rate if not better on my 6800 agp

OK.. well ur CPU is on the low side, if i remember correctly, the miminum for playing the game is 2.7.. dont quote me on that though, so if that is right that would explain alot.. If not.. then i cant think of anything, just make sure that all your drivers are up-to-date. Try cleaning out the cache and make sure that your pagefile is the correct size. You have anough RAM, so that ok, and with that video card you should be getting alot better.

Yeah you should be able to set the settings maxed out with that resolution using that video card but I do have a feeling it may be the processor. Try lowering the settings such as dynamic lighting and shadows, you should get much better frames.

CPU is bottleneck here for sure. 2.8ghz P4 is extremly slow.

No. Sorry. You are mistaken. P4 2.8 is plenty fast. Way too darn hot, and somewhat inefficient, but plenty fast.

Most likely causes for bad fps:

            1) spyware--run an antispyware scan
            2) too many programs running in the background--close all programs in the taskbar
            3) too many processes running in the background--close processes unnecessary for windows and your needed peripherals
            4) something is screwey with one of your your sticks of ram--run memtest, maybe take out the two 256's and see if just having the 512's makes a difference

            5) (as a side note, probably nothing to do with frame rates but it never hurts) the HD you've got the BF2 and/or windows on was last defragmented by somebody wearing a spaces suit with a nametag on his shirt

You people that are saying that a P4 2.8 is too slow...

            Should!

            Be!

            FLOGGED!

What? Do you folks work for Intel? AMD?

I totally agree with Whompertoo, your system is more than enough to handle those settings.....his suggestions to tweak sound good to me, especially the memtest...

First off you have put memory sticks of uneven size in a dual channel motherboard which is a big no-no. 2x512MB, 4x512MB or 2x512MB + 2x256MB is the right configuration. Since you have only three 512mb sticks I recommend you put 2 of them in the motherboard in the correct slots for dual channel operation. Might be the 2 blue slots. Leave the other 2 until you get another 512 or 256 stick.

When you have done that you should change the graphic quality settings in BF2. They are way too high for your system. Try everything on medium except texture filtering on high, view distance 100% and antialiasing (AA) on 2x. I'm running my AMD 64 (overclocked to someting like 4400+) with 2GB 500Mhz dual channel DDR, and a overclocked 7800GT at medium settings except textures on high (since I have 2GB ram) texture filtering high, view distance 100% and 2x AA. Resolution 1280x1024@85Hz.

                  Blasphemy!
                  I have a P4 2.6, and a slow 6600 256mb and I get a steady FPS of 40 with everything medium(except lighting)

Wow. I am running on a P4 2.4ghz, 512MB ram (another gig coming next week!), ATI Radeon X850 Pro AGP 256MB, and 80GB HDD 5400RPM, and I run this game at 6x AA, Texture Filtering High, All settings at medium except lighting low, and at 1600x1200 resolution and i get very high FPS. Dunno whats wrong with your system, it pwns mine lol. Must be your ram because its not in duel channel as said before.

Yes, I agree with Whomper and Wasp

the rest of you are well, nvm, Ive made mistakes before too.
                      anyways:
The minumum CPU is 1.7ghz, and actually, the RECOMMENDED CPU speed is also 1.7. BF2, isnt really CPU bound, it is more RAM and Video Card bound.
That is a plenty good processer.

Yes, a 7800gs should be problably doing better. Heres some issues why.
(sorry if some of it has already been stated)
Everyone knows that to run without stuttering on High settings, you should have about 2GB of ram, now, of course 1.7GB of ram is very close... but you have to most GHETTTTOOOOO ram configuration ever. You should probably clean up your ram sticks and just go with 4x512MB, or 2x1GB. I mean, even 2x512MB would probably work better than your current setup.
Yes, there might still be another problem, because those FPS are kinda low but that is most likely the problem.

What speed are all the ram sticks? You should be running PC3200 (DDR400), are all the sticks PC3200? If not they will all run at the speed of the slowest stick of ram.

A P4 2.8 is plenty fast for this game but its the memory that bothers me. Does your mobo support dual channel memory? I think it does and that could be your issue

You need 2 sticks of matching pairs to enable dual channel for best performance plugged into the correct slots.

yeah its definately the ram. Ive got the xfx 7800gs extreme edition and the only thing that stops me from playing everything on high is the ram. Ive got another 1gb coming the weekend (currently this rig runs on 1gb pc3200 corsair xms ram). The 7800 gs will play everything on high but the ram is definately your bottleneck here.
