I use ATI catalyst (have an x800xt AIW). Never had much of a problem, other than the known issues (halo/bloom effect in BF2:SF w/night vision on). Besides that, ATI provides a driver uninstall utility that completely removes (or so they say) the footprints the previous driver left.

But yeah...you should definitely check out your card when you clean the comp.

Here's a suggestion for next time: download and run 3dmark05 with the case covers off and verify that the fan comes on/stays on under load and appears to be working.

In general, I think the 9800 pro is a great card. That's why I gave mine to my little brother and upgraded--I couldn't bear to watch Oblivion bring my 9800 pro (my super, super card ~18 months ago) to it's knees.

i agree that it sounds like a heat problem, or more specifically an OC'ing issue.

good luck with the soloution, i use that card but have never epereinced that specific problem.

Thanks for the recommendations; I used the ATI uninstaller, then installed Catalyst 6.4. I was really underestimating the importance of uninstalling your old drivers first. I think that's what was causing my problems. Now the new drivers work great! I haven't notice any issues yet, but if I do, I'll try modifying the BIOS settings mentioned above.
